This is what I am curious about. If you are 17 and from Scarsdale, how are you seeing shootings, mugging and robberies... when you don't even live in the city?

I dont know but I think Soundview is overrated in terms of crime. From my research it was bad, but falls behind about 5 Bronx neighborhoods this year. I have no doubt that the projects are really bad, but the neighborhood as a whole isn't the worst.

Alot of Bronx neighborhoods have a higher population Rapid city, most have twice the population.......NYC is just too big to compare to such a small city. The absolute massiveness of it skew stats. I rather compare neighborhoods, and those I've done are worst than Rapid city....so im with Futurecop.

Yes I will like to see murder rates. Crime can be anything these days, but I want to know that I am more likely to be killed in soundview than in Detroit.

Would you say Soundview is worse than Detriot? or Camden? East St. Louis? I think not.

I'd need to population of the 43rd Precinct (Soundview) to calculate the per capita crime rate... there were 12 murders in Soundview in 2006.

Let me give it a try. From the Community District 9, which includes Soundview and Castle hill the census population was 167,859. So far in 2007, the 43rd precinct (Soundview, Castlehill, Parkchester) has had 5 murders. So per 100,000 that comes out to about 3 murders. Not very high, but yet again the Bronx isn't known for its murders. It's known more for it's high crime, especially robberies.

"Hmm, I want to raise my kids where they'll be safe, no gangs. Where should I go? Farmtown, Nebraska with 1 murder, but a higher crime rate because only 5 people live there, or should I choose NYC?
If I lived in a town of only 5 people, and one of them was a psychopathic killer? I'd be a HECK of a lot more scared than I would in New York! That's like having a killer in your HOME!

In New York, there are some bad neighborhoods where crime is higher, and good neighborhoods where crime is lower. If you live in a good neighborhood in New York where there's not much crime, why on earth should you be terrified to raise your kids there? Just because it's "OMG New York City!"?

2006 City-data.com crime index (higher means more crime, U.S. average = 326.8)
Rapid City, SD - 299.7
New York, NY - 268.5
These statistics seem to be incredibly inaccurate. According to this same index Scranton, PA, which had no murders in 2006 and is rarely mentioned on the local news for crime, has a crime index of 300.5. I don't trust the accuracy of these statistics for one second if they think a city like Scranton, where some people still leave their doors open at night, is less safe than both NYC and Rapid City. I've walked around the city at night before and have NEVER felt uneasy.

Methinks these crime statistics are about as reliable as a 1980s sedan.

I know you probably think you are in an idyllic PA town that could never possibly be more dangerous than big, bad NYC, but...

Do some research on the crime that is happening in Scranton. While there were no murders in Scranton in 2006, they have a much higher incidence of every single other listed crime per capital... Here is it listed side-by-side:

Your city most likely has a higher crime ranking because of the high high amount of burglary and theft... maybe because of those unlocked doors?

REMEMBER:

These statistics are all REPORTED crimes. I am sure that many crimes go unreported in New York while most every crime that happens in Rapid City ends up on the front page of the newspaper.

Rape is reported constantly in Rapid City while in New York many rapes probably go unreported.

Also, in 2000 there was 1 murder in Rapid City. In New York, there were 673. New York is also surrounded by many large towns where crime is rampant. Rapid City is surrounded by mountains, forest, and ranches.

Who seems safer? REALLY?
