Not sure what anon is looking at, but the link he posted showed a pretty regular community...rows of well maintained brownstones, clean streets, and a few places where further development is likely to occur ( vacant lot and some industrial buildings). It did not come across as shady at all..but it did look residential with no amenities...but it depends on the block...1 might have no amenities because the main street has them all.
My concern is not with the appearance of the neighborhood at all, but with the $1,000 rent for an apt, which includes utilities. That sounds unusually affordable for such a hyped nabe (I dont know the market there so I am just speculating). Secondly, when it includes utilities it often means it is either an illegal apt and/or is a basement apt..so if it is a basement apt..make sure you have 2 exits, like a front door and back door in case of fire, or at least full size windows you can get through.
Dag even in 2011 with google maps doing everything they can to make areas like Brownsville look like Brooklyn Heights, that area still looks shady as hell...
Poor choice of words... I originally just took a quick glance from far. This time I scrolled around and the part I thought looked a little off heading down Lexington actually didn't look that bad... Google Maps though is its own real estate agency for NYC... Even sections of B-ville look like a picnic on that site when in reality, most of these areas look nothing like the way they seem online...
I own brownstone in Stuyvesant Heights (Macon/Lewis) My smaller apartments 750 sq/ft rent for 1400. The further east you go the more gentrified Bed Sty is. That being said if you stay away from the projects and hold yourself like you belong in the hood you will be OK. Just keep your eyes open and don't flash money, jewelry, or electronics around. Check out Bedford Stuyvesant Spotcrime for a reality check. Good luck

I find the more south and east you go the better it is. Along the Nostrand and Utica A train stops. Maybe not as many hipsters, but overall a nicer section of town.

I dont disagree but that's south west of where the OP will be living.
