How bad?
I remember slick gang members playing "3-card molly" with tourist crowds, prostitutes walking near Bus Terminal, and lots of homeless addicts panhandling. Such individuals were encountered when going with parents to see Broadway shows (Cats, Sarafina!, Annie, etc.) or popular movies (Jaws, E.T., Star Wars). Policemen chilled at newstands, IHOP or Beefsteak Charlie's while kids jumped turnstyles on MTA. All changed in 2009, when Mayor Dinkins got Disney to push out porn shops and make way for renovated theaters. Times Square now looks grand, yet empty.
In the early 90's right before it got Disneyfied it was my go to place for arcade games, 48th st guitar gear, fake ids, and the occasional mj.
Now that I'm grown up, I like that is Disneyfied although I have no reason to go there since I'm not a tourist. Especaily since pretty much all the guitar stores vacated 48th street.
did hookers hang by B'way and 7th the upper 40's like by the *****cat cinema and the ***rod theater on 49th? i never saw any hookers over there in the 15-20 years before the cleanup but i thought maybe after theater hours there were. the area sure looked like 42nd street
do you think the theater area sidestreets like Shubert Alley 44th up to 50th between B'way and 8th were dangerous after theater hours or were they just dead to pedestrians? like would you encounter bad people(addicts etc) if you found yourself say on 47th street between B'way and 8th at 12:30 AM? I know now it would be fine but prior to the cleanup...?
