By the way, go check out the site "URBAN Baby". Many if not almost all of the "regulars" on that board are upper middle/upper class WHITE women in URBAN areas like NYC and LA/San Francisco.

I never said there aren't any exceptions. Urbandictionary doesn't mean (exclusively) "stuff black kids say" and urbanspoon doesn't mean "Sylvia's in Harlem!"
I said that colloquially, "urban" is a codeword for "black" the same way people use the terms "eggplant", "monday", etc, but at least with less negative connotations than the others.
In general I agree with alot of what posters have already said. Puerto Ricans (and to a much lesser degree Dominicans) have moved in significant numbers to Pennsylvania, NJ, Upstate NY, and of course Florida (Central Florida to be exact). In fact in the next few years Florida will have a larger population of PRs than anywhere in the country, including NY! The power base is shifting to Florida (Central Florida), as are the middle class PRs. This outmigration has been occurring since the 90s and accelerated in the 2000s.
Blacks have been moving (or rather returning) to the South for sometime, with Atlanta a choice destination, but also NC and SC. And they have found phenomenal success in their new home, which has helped others move to the areas also.
This population shift will continue for both populations, with Mexicans/Central Americans, Dominicans, and Asians are happily taking their place in NYC. And that ain't a bad thing.

And that's the beauty of New York City. Ethnic groups immigrate or move in to modest areas, they assimilate, move up, and move out, only to be replaced by other groups trying to get a toehold in the United States. This has been going on for over 100 years.

Immigrants have always flocked to New York City. It's not like the ethnic whites of New York don't have immigrant ancestors who were once "taking over" the city. Quite a large portion of the black population here is West Indian, so they obviously have immigrant origins as well.
Why are people so worried?? They wanted us out....they raised the rents....we're leaving to a better life....$1300for a 1brm apt or 1300 for a mortgage on a 3 or 4bdrm house in the south....

Don't be so paranoid. Nobody wanted you out. They did what every landlord in America does - charge the highest rent the market will pay. The color they like is green.
Well that is the proposition people are now facing in NYC far more than they did before. What you pay in rent for a 2 bedroom apt in most areas of NYC can get you a nice 3-4 bedroom home with yard and garage parking. Hard to pass up that opportunity..and it is really the only way these people will ever get ahead, save money, and actually live a decent live. And lots of people are moving for just that reason. It just isn't worth it anymore...I completely understand.
But what's interesting is that for every person or family moving out, there is at least one person or one family moving in. It is as difficult as ever to find a decent apartment throughout New York City, despite the ridiculously high rents.

Many Blacks are West Indian, African, or Black Hispanic so a huge percentage of the black population in NYC are immigrants or first generation Americans.
