She's a beautiful woman but I think they probably thought she was Italian with that Italian looking/sounding name.

About once a month I see at least one latina, east asian and or indian girl in NYC who could be Miss America. No wonder the city is winning more.

I as well am very happy for a 2nd NYker winning. Her performance was beautiful and she was great overall. I had a hunch she was going to be in the top 3. Glad to see other cultures and ethnicities being recognized and participating in these programs. Being Hispanic and marrying into an Indian culture I am equally as proud!

She is originally from the Syracuse area and I believe that she grew up in Fayetteville, a relatively affluent suburb east of Syracuse. I think her family moved to and lived in Oklahoma for a while too.

The first time I saw her picture I thought she was black. It wasn't until after I read the caption, that I realized she was Indian/Arab. Here is the link:
