I find Geico is the cheapest. I got a couple of quotes before I renewed from some places that advertised they can save hundreds of dollars off of Geico. Turned out they cost hundreds more.

May I ask why?

I'm still actually against the idea of having a car and don't believe it'll be cost effective, but I'm starting to do some research since my license-less husband is really into the idea.

Wait - who's going to get stuck with the driving? If he doesn't have a license, does that mean you have to do all the driving? Do you like driving in NYC? For me it's one of the most stressful things about having a car here -- actually having to drive it in exasperating traffic with aggressive drivers. I would weigh that carefully too.

I actually don't mind driving at all, and prefer city driving to driving somewhere like a curvy mountainside. I'm more concerned about the cost and hassle of owning versus the occasional convenience. Renting occasionally might still be the best bet, especially after we see the insurance cost that I always hear about and is being reaffirmed here.

I get discount for anti-theft....having layers does not give more discount. for example, I have lojack too and there is not a stand alone discount for this
The car I keep in the city is specified as garaged, likely because of the low use, but cars registered out of state and in Westchester are not questioned as to the parking arrangements. I would have to review he policy discounts, but I do get a greater discount for anti-theft with LoJack, but not a second discount for the factory system. Some insurers will not give the same discount for OnStar or BMW Assist as they do for LoJack. Much of it is variable, and I agree that the OP should comparison shop.

just get a quote from geico.com so you have a ballpark idea (you can do it for each zip code you are considering). you don't even need to give real personally identifiable information

they will give a quote. Just have a few models, yr & make. If you have one already, its even easier. Geico has a online function for current policyholders to get a whole bunch of quotes. I can quickly see the price differences ranging from Cadillac, Honda, Range Rover, Toyota, etc when I was looking for a new car.....most importantly, comparing apples to apples insured amount. $800 a year verses $5,000 can make or break a budget for a new policy
