Wow, I never expected so many great responses! Thanks for the advice, you've been really helpful. So it looks like I won't be going to NYC after all; the Big Apple is forbidden fruit that will have to wait.

By the way, I appreciate the advice on law schools and rankings, but it seems I'm going to try for a postbaccalaureate pre-med program now. Wish me luck!

You seem more focused on life than career now. Fortunately NY is the best place for both. Come here for life and work on your career after arriving.

This may or may not work for you..but..if you want to make serious $$$ in any major city in this world..learn how to bartend. That's a skill that's always in demand..and it's fairly easy to keep yourself afloat once you get that first bartending job. You're in ATL. grab a job as a server in a liquor-oriented establishment. more nightclub than food, or both,if they have a full, active bar. let mgmt know you want to bartend..hell get a job as a barback. You'll learn quite a lot right there. grab a book of drink recipes..or get one of the many free apps that go right on your smartphone. ask a bartender where you work, once you find a server/barback gig, to work with you on how to sling drinks..get TIPS-certified. its a class of a few hours, cost all of $40 bucks. See, none of this is your "career"..but..in NYC..or any city, once you have some experience..it'll pay the **** out of your bills. Guys/girls(especially girls) out there making thousands a week for like 3-4 nights a week in shifts. Gives you a lot of time to pursue whatever it is you're pursuing. something to think about..good luck man.

I was in the same situation. I just knew I was moving to New York from Atlanta without a job. I realized that I would not be as happy as if I had a job already. I started applying EVERYwhere and eventually got an interview (using my friends address) and I got the job (well pending my background check). I am happy that I got it because it takes a lot of worry off of my soldier.
