Advice on neighborhoods - for old and new posters
Dont ask me why, but i was curious about Anchorage Alaska. So i went on the Anchorage part of this forum to see what people had to say.
Surprisingly, I discovered that a lot of people said that Anchorage has a serious gang problem, and it is 2nd in the country among big cities with rape. Also, there is a serious alcoholism problem up there, which leads to a lot of crime.
Certain neighborhoods (i forget which ones) in Anchorage were greatly expressed not to move to.
The people asking questions about Anchorage on the forum seemed very welcoming to this info and didnt question 1 bit of it.
Now how come when certain people on this board give their honest opinion of a neighborhood whether its what the person wants to hear or not, we get attacked for it?
Seems like everybody just wants to hear that their neighborhood is 100% safe but thats just me.
Nobody got attacked on the Anchorage board for it, so it just struck me as odd...

Yes very odd. Especially since crimes in some neighborhoods have made the news more than just a few times this year and the residents and frequent visitors of some neighborhoods also are giving inside knowledge of situations that did not make the nightly news.
The same way the good in neighborhoods should come out, so should the bad. The bad should not be covered up. I know for myself personally, I like to just talk about the good, however I think it is irresponsible not to give someone all the information I can if they are looking to move into my area. This is not to stop them, but to properly inform them. I'm sure that they are probably looking at several areas and would like to know as much as they can about them all.

it probably has something to do with the weather too--theres only a few hrs of daylight during the winter, which creates a depressive atmosphere. theres high suicide rates in those northern regions.

The thing is in the NYC forum people tend to talk about neighborhoods they don't even live in or are even that familiar with. People do it all the time here. I can't even keep track of how many times I've seen people post on neighborhoods in the Bronx, and upper Manhattan, based on stereotypes.
On the flipside I think people are too quick on here to attack someone who says something positive about a neighborhood with a traditionally bad rep. For instance God forbid you say something positive about the Bronx, or Harlem, people will have a field day with you.

NooYowkur81 was it you that posted that you live on the UWS now and that you briefly lived in Harlem? But anyway I understand where you are coming from. I'm in Morningside Heights and I don't like when people say its crime free and if they admit to it, they attribute the crime to the minorities, and they are people that just pass through, have never lived there. Since the neighborhood is diverse this is definitely not the case. Morningside Heights is pretty nice for the most part.
But some people are on the forum are young and energetic and they are all over the place. They really visit and spend time in these neighborhoods so they are better able to say what is going on than someone that may just pass through in the daytime.
