The apartment is on Ralph and Halsey near Saratoga Spa state park. I know BedStuy is changing as a neighborhood, but I wanted to know if the area I mentioned above is safe at night.

I don't know. But it's only a few blocks from where this took place in 2011. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/02/ny...-bed-stuy.html

That area still needs work, you should practice vigilance at night, and even at day, you could never let your guard down. That being said, there are a noticeable population of 'new comers' (hipsters, yupsters or transplants) in that particular area near the Halsey station. Ralph Ave, that area could also be considered Ocean Hill, depending on what side of the street you are on.

Two things that puzzle me about the story:

1) One of the guys grew up in Brownsville. He must know what to expect.

2) How'd the robbers get in? They were inside, and it was midnight. They didn't bother lock their front door?

I'm not really sure those things make much of a difference. Even if the door was unlocked, the robbers still committed a crime. It seems like that's sort of the same thing as blaming a mugging victim for talking on an iphone while walking down a street.

OP: area mentioned sounds like Brownsville/Ocean Hill. In immortal words of rap group M.O.P:"Ante Up". Tread lightly.

The odds of something happening to you are probably not high. And I'd argue the area is improved, even in the 2 years since that incident with that band. Given that, there are other areas of the neighborhood I'd recommend over this one. Especially for one asking about safety. But as someone suggested, go there at night and see how you feel. If you're uncomfortable, don't move in.
