There is a movie theater in Sunnyside on Queens Blvd. and Sunnyside has subway convenient access to Manhattan.
I think that Glendale is a nice neighborhood but doesn't have convenient subway access to Midtown Manhattan.
The movie theater in sunnyside is not very good. I live right by it, and refuse to go there. Apparently it used to be really good until new owners came in and it went down the drain. I walk to the UA Kauffman in Astoria instead.
You'll probably have share an apartment with roommates since getting a studio or 1 bedroom in an area that has a reasonable commute is going to be incredibly tough. Not to mention landlords requiring 40x the rent, credit checks, deposit, and/ or 1 month rent in advance. Also, people willing to pay more than you since apartment hunting is a competitive sport based partially on how much you have in your bank account. On a budget on your own is incredibly frustrating.
Are you willing to share? If so there's Hudson Heights, Inwood in Upper Manhattan. I'll second the UES, further east going toward 2nd, 3rd and York Avenue where. In Brooklyn there's Bay Ridge and Ridgewood.
Your best bet might be searching in Queens since there are a lot of deals to be had there. I'd recommend Astoria (which is becoming more and more in demand and expensive each month) Sunnyside, Forest Hill and Kew Gardens which are all mostly quiet neighborhoods.
And of course Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil up in the Bronx but that's a bit of a commute depending on where you work. Many NYer's can only stand (literally) 30-40 minutes riding on the subway during rush hour. Metro North, LIRR are a bit more tolerable if you choose to live in area that are further away such as Riverdale and Forest Hills.
Where do people get the idea that it would be any other way? I know about the knock out thing, but that happened all over the city, not just in the recently gentrified parts like Crown!
…………...
(My probably far off impression of Brooklyn is that it's a place full of low key intellectuals)
lol.
