Which parts of Harlem are relatively safer than other parts? And which are the worst? Like, eastern part (1st ~ Lexington avenues), or western part (Park avenue ~ Lenox ave.)? Southern (110-130's) or Northern (130's~140's)? Which parts are the most dangerous?
I would argue that west of the park is safer, on the other hand, there were three armed robberies and four or something shootings between adolescents in the past week, Amsterdam and Broadway, 130s and 140s.
Central harlem is just about bottom in terms of quality-of-life, litter and garbage, anti-socials. And there are shootings and so on there as well.
Doesn't really work that way with upper manhattan. It's a block by block type of thing...
I would say NONE. You may live on a "good" block but be surrounded by crap. What's to stop an armed robber or a burglarer or a rapist from coming to your "good" block? Nothing.
Good is not good if you're surrounded by a cesspool.

That could happen to you in areas that are traditionally considered good as well. Not quite sure what your point is.
But "relatively safer" I would guess Hamilton Heights falls under that category. But even in there, there are certainly blocks that are much more attractive than others which was my previous point.

Not really. And certainly not like Harlem.
Hamilton heights is much better in many ways, the biggest challenge being the lack of decent amenities - improving somewhat of late but not enough. Actually, this is a problem in most areas of Harlem, basically dollar store, bodega, "discount !!!" garbage and nothing else. Rather than an actual Gap store, a "Gap Outlet" store. No Equinox; "Blink." People actually called "Best Yet" a version of Whole Foods - which it is not, not at all. Not even close. Best Yet is a C-Town or Fine Fare that sells (for top dollar) a few "organic" items, and never the right ones, that are usually out of date.
There is a growing population here that spends most of its considerable disposable income elsewhere.
Not sure why nobody has realized that and moved to cash in, but what can you do. Let's see what happens with the proposed Whole Foods, apparently in the works. Or what happens in the Columbia building area.
The safest place would be near Bill Clinton's office...but not under his desk.
Writing from Arizona and all, you would have no idea that this is not at all the case, or that Clinton is no longer even there. Has not been for some time.
