Saw this on the news last night. Apparently they aren't sure if this was a hate crime and if so what category. Gay? Black? Elected (Jewish) officials from the area are saying they find the story "odd" and "out of character" for the area.
Have been hearing reports that the Jewish community of Williamsburg is not happy with all the changes that "gentrification" is bringing on many levels. From bike paths to women, men, trannies or whatever not dressing "properly" especially on the Sabbath or what not.
It does seem after long having their way and almost turning that part of Williamsburg into Kiryas Joel, the Hassidic Jewish population is getting antsy about change.
There is also the fact rising property values and or gentrification means property is no longer cheap, and that is causing housing problems.
Hassidic Jews favour building larger apartments to better cope with their usually equally large families. However in terms of affordable housing more bang for the buck comes from smaller units.

The hasids in Williamsburg and "their" other areas( where they believe they own the streets) have their own neighborhood vigilantes aka Shomrim, who have always bullied "outsiders" for non conformance of dress, mode of transportation, color of skin or any other perceived threat, real or imagined. They have been known to confront non hasidic women for "immodesty",bicyclists for riding bikes, etc.
There are numerous news stories and videos on the internet documenting their bullying.
I lived in Williamsburg for many years and am well aware of their thuggish behavior. This inebriated guy probably made the mistake of pissing someplace while he was waking home in Williamsburg and they descended on him en mass, which is quite typical. They behave like a pack of wolves when they confront anyone.I have personally seen them in action both day and night.
I guess his broken eye socket, torn retina, bruises and blood clotting are all fake. Did you see the photos of the guy?
Dov Hikind claims this is "out of character" for the ultra-Orthodox Jews.... Bullshiit.
