I didn't get a verbal one or a written one from 4 of the people. And yes I will expect a thank you of some kind. It's basic manors. Had I stayed living there for another holiday season I would've given no tips as the 2 that did thank me verbally and written, left the building.

Hey, great story, by the way, we're not in Japan.

Don't forget to ask your waiter for a tip next time you eat out, what with you being the reason they have a job in the first place and all.

This is the same type of dribble that people who don't think you should tip in restaurants try to foist on good people who understand that tipping is just another form of payment for a product or service received
it is not a sense of entitlement any more than your paycheck from your employer is a sense of entitlement.

Decent corporations give bonuses to their employees. Thus landlord's and managing companies should be the ones doling out money to their workers.
A bank gives it's employees bonuses, bank customers do not.

Why should renters at Trump Place give bonuses to the staff...let THE DONALD do it.

How can you compare a waiter who makes LESS than minimum wage and depends on tips to make a living, to a unionized super who makes over 6 figures a year in combined salary, benefits, free apartment, vacation and bonuses, before tips?? Makes absolutely no sense!

You don't seem to understand the basic point of gift giving.

A tip or gift given out during the holidays is a sign of thanks, and is not a function of one's income.

I don't tally up my friend's income, normalize them about mine, then base who gets a gift and who doesn't off of that.

Don't be ridiculous. A tip given during the holidays is how you submit to the implied extortion, that employees not tipped won't do their job where you are concerned unless you pay them directly.

On the train today I heard some waitress bitching about customers that tip less than 20%. I mean I never tip less than 20% because it's not a big deal to me but I thought that was above average.

Restaurant service is generally so much better in America than Europe. There are places like Chipolte that have good food if you really can't afford to tip.
