HELP!! Question about Harlem Area Apartments
My boyfriend and I are looking to move from bedford stuyvesant to an apartment in harlem and we aren't sure if the area is safe. We visited when it was dark outside but were not sure if that is indicative of the dangers that may or may not be present. The area is east 135th and there ARE housing projects nearby.
yay or nay ?

You live in Bed-Stuy and you're asking about Harlem? Have you been to walk around the area?

yes. I was there around 6pm but not for very long. Believe it or not, the part of bedstuy i live in is not near the projects; this part of harlem is. do you know anything about that specific part of harlem?

How long did live in Bed-Stuy? If you spent anytime there you should be ok. I know that some areas/blocks of Bed-Stuy are better than others. Over on East 135th. It is a rough area so you would need to take the necessary precautions.
How far East are you? What is the nearest cross street? The closer you are to Lenox Ave/Malcolm X Blvd the better.

its on madison. Bedstuy doesn't scare me. Lets say I lived on the nicest block in bedstuy, how would that rank with blocks in east harlem?

Well you are only 2 blocks from Lenox/Malcolm X Blvd and 135th is major crosstown block going from St Nick east to the river. It's a very busy area. All transportation is on Lenox/Malcolm X Blvd. You have Harlem Hospital and the PJ's over there. It is rougher over there than the nicest block on Bedstuy. The nicest block on Bedstuy is probably a lot prettier and quieter than 135th and Madison as well.

there's 2 projects over there, abraham lincoln and riverton....they both have a wild rep but i have friends that live in lenox terrace nearby and they pretty much steered clear of there and minded their business so they didnt have trouble there.

Riverton is not a project. It looks like it but it's not. It's actually a somewhat luxury rental, just a beat shy of Lenox Terrace, without the fancy doorman etc.
The Lincoln Projects is definitely rough. Has always been and probably will always be.
Madison Avenue over by that way is going to be rougher than you're used to. It's changing, but slowly. There are a lot of low income housing juxtaposed with the condos. I wouldn't give up a good area in Bed Stuy for that area. JMO.
