Hi, I'm looking to relocate to Astoria. Is it cheaper than Brooklyn? Also, what streets/neighborhoods would yo recommend that are relatively safe for an apt between 1000-1500?(ballpark).
If anyone has a link or site address to apartments in this area would be great. Thanks!
It's cheaper than the trendy parts of Brooklyn, but more expensive than the non-trendy parts. You can definitely get a studio or possibly even a 1BR in Astoria for $1300-$1500...it's all pretty safe but you probably don't want to be right next to the projects or the elevated train.

Better deals are to be had in southern Brooklyn.
Really? 1BR in Astoria for $1300-$1500… That's very doubtful. Not the great 1 bedroom may start at $1500 but your not likely to find one for $1300 unless you know someone who knows someone.

I saw one for $1400 over the summer, it was real...small and not very nice, but they exist.
Astoria by the river, maybe you could find something there within your budget. But at that point, why not expand your search into the surrounding areas.

I was looking at ones on Steinway st and 25th ave. Where would you suggest in the surrounding areas?

To the south is sunnyside and to the east is Woodside. Further following the subway lines past these two neighborhoods would bring you to Jackson heights and Elmhurst followed by rego park, forest hills, corona and kew gardens. Remember, queens is very multi-cultured, so like Astoria, different ethnic characteristics define each of them. It is not very black and white. Also, if you desire to stay close to manhattan, queens is more affordable than brooklyn (unless you are okay with living in the hood, then it's about the same price -- actually, queens might even still be cheaper).
