Long story short I need to find a place to live in a couple of months.

Unfortunately I make pretty **** money ($500 a week after taxes). I work in Queens and need to be able to use public transportation to get there.

Where should I be looking?
Any useful information would be appreciated.

This will be my first move from living with my parents.

i would say check the lotteries. if you have verifiable income that meets the limits, you can get a place. BUT, the income ranges are really low. you actually might make too much, go figure! 500/wk after takes is like 650/wk before which would be $33,800 a year - the lotteries typically accept 40% or 50% AMI, with the max income for a single person at either $24,080 or $30,100. there may be some that accept your range tho, so check HPD's website (housingconnect.gov and nyc.gov/hpd) and check those free newspapers - AMNY & Metro because they tend to post the ads for apartments in there even before the websites. good luck!

You might have to share a room (sleep with another person in the room) or rent out space in a basement. Go place ads on newyork.craigslist.org.

Just look for a roommate/apt sharing type situation in Queens close to where you work. Problem solved.

BTW, $2000/month after taxes is not too bad.

In this crazy city you are unlikely to find anything where a Landlord is involved... do you even have credit
established in your name since you have been living with parents. I think Long Island is where I would head and also look for a second job.

I agree. You are just starting out. Take this period to work hard and establish yourself-And this is important: Save your money. You can with what it seems you are making. You will not only eventually need a place for yourself but want to establish the security of not living paycheck to paycheck and having an emergency fund. This is a chance to do so.

If you are sharing an apt with someone, Spend some time around them beyond the usual interview that is given with these shares. You can't predict or control everything but being prepared and noticing the small details are a huge help.
