You can go through Emilio's Skip Shop. They charter buses that go to different places (Hunter, Okemo, Mt. Snow, etc) and it's actually really reasonably priced. I've done it several times through their Forest Hills location.
There are tons of charter buses from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens to various ski slopes.
Contact any mountain within a few hours of NYC, and they can give you the shuttle bus options. Or contact a local ski shop, and they will have schedules.
There are no direct trains to any ski slopes. Everyone takes the buses.
Join a local ski club.
You will make friends and get reasonable weekend packages to ski areas with no thought from you other than to send in the check and get on the bus.
They are always fun.

Any club fees? Suggestions of a few clubs to look up?
For public transit, I'd say your best bet would be Amtrak to Amsterdam (or maybe Albany, but Amsterdam is closer to the mountains) and a bus from there to the Adirondacks rather than taking a bus the whole way.
Check out OvrRide.com. I have been using them for 2 years. They are like Emilios ski shop, except their buses are newer and they offer free breakfast (bagel + water, sometimes beers)
They usually have weekend buses to Hunter, NY (2.5 hours), Stratton, VT (3.5 hours), Mount Snow, VT (4 hours), Killington, VT (5 hours) and Stowe, VT (5.5 hours). They also do the Rockies, West Coast and international trips.
Blue Mountain is also okay if you don't like bus ride (2 hours), but the mountain is smaller compared to the ones in VT.
