Considering that the internet and cell phones were not around until after the neighborhood "changed", then a flash mob could not have happened before then. However, if internet and cell phones were around in 1950, kids back then would have done the same things with the internet that they are doing today (maybe worse considering our society has becoming significantly less violent). If you believe otherwise you are deluding yourself.

Yeah.. I'm sure kids in the WW2 era - the 1960's in numerous neighborhoods were mobbing stores just because, playing knockout with random ladies of all ages and fighting over the latest shoes.

Come on... kids were working hard or in school trying to get those grades up. Families were stricter in those eras and so were the policies. We are speaking about a non PC era.

Flash mobs are events which normally do not lead to violence. This is something totally different. These were savages who took advantage of lax security and lack of police presence to wreak havoc and maybe profit by robbing a couple of stores while they were at it.

I grew up in the vicinity of Kings Plaza and it was a good area until the mall was built. The quality of life steadily declined thereafter.

Shadowmassa...revisionist history is just that....I am sure it makes you feel good to think "back in the day" kids were busy working hard in school, while dad worked his job and spent his free time reading the bible and building homes for the elderly...but that was not reality in NYC.

The crime was epic, and so was the corruption. Because some of you only *remembered* being outside and playing "safely", and smiles and giggles everywhere you looked has nothing to do with reality. I too remember the same things...except it was the 80s in the South Bronx...surely as a child I was remembering correctly right?

A simple google about crime pre 1960 in NYC will be eye opening for some of you....Gangs of New York is a great movie and spot on. If you want to talk about where crime in NYC started, the street gang culture, and ghettos, it was with the Irish in the mid-late 1800s. Every group since then followed in their footsteps....and you can bet if the internet and cell phones were around back then, the crimes you would be seeing would have been far worse than today.

These deviants that went on the rampage are not just "kids being kids". They are poorly raised thugs whose parent(s) should be hauled into jail to answer for them. What you have here, sir, is a complete breakdown in respect for social order and plain good manners. If they want to behave like a pack of wild animals they should be hunted down and caged. In case you didn't read the whole story, businesses had to CLOSE because of the actions of these animals. Innocent people were having their bags snatched from them. Disgraceful. There is no defending them.
One problem with that - half the parents aren't around, they're likely to come from the hood where single parent households are prevalent or households where mommy and daddy both work to put food on the table leaving the young'ins to run around and cause havoc. What do you have when a thug raises a child? Another round of thugs to make the hood go 'round. The participants should be hunted down, beat down and then thrown into a maximum security clink for a couple of months.
