You can pretend how these things are quintessential whatever, but the fact is they are bad and sad for those who work to make it "magical" for you. Ignorance of the truth makes you the saddest of all...and expressing sympathy for the "poor carriage drivers" who are out of jobs is like feeling bad for the black slaves owners when the slaves were freed...what will happen to the poor slave owners when there is no one to enslave?
Good points.

Strongly agree.
And would add - there will always be more to enslave. The so-called educational system and popular media contribute toward that.

Yet, millions of NYers & visitors do it.

No....this is the fault of owners who are taking advantage of legal and illegal residents. They are to blame, not those eating at restaurants, as we the public have no idea about employee wages/living conditions. However if we do know of the horrible conditions, as we know with the horse carriage industry, continuing to pretend that it is some sort of magical, quintessential NYC experience is ridiculous and just an excuse to exploit others for your own benefit. And that's exactly what these carriage drivers AND people riding are doing.

Only the delusional are unaware of working conditions in Back of House.
Not much better, where your produce is picked. Enjoy that healthy salad!

True. Or for that matter, plenty of immigrants working the front of the house in a number of restaurants as waiters (paid under the minimum wage, no health insurance, etc.) If their status is legal they now can get health insurance via the affordable healthcare act) but it doesn't change how they are poorly officially paid (there's tipping, but it isn't as much as people think and tips are taxed).

Call me crazy but it sounds like paradise not having those yellow cab jerkoffs causing havoc everywhere. I hate cabs.

Default Horses over Babies

Ironically we kill 800 babies a day in NYC via abortion slaughter but horses are supposedly protected here. These horses are doomed as they are huge draft horses and will be on their way to Kagoshima Japan to be slaughtered now that they are out of work. While I'm sure there were some callus horse owners there were likely more that treated their steeds with kindness and affection. In the big picture there are no oil wars or pollution issues from horses like there are from perto-power. Sorry to see the horses go.

Next on the block is Aqueduct racetrack in Queens. The Casino interests have huge designs for an "honest graft" project down there and it will be easy to play the high moral ground "Whole Foods" card to justify the elimination of horse racing in NYC. The profits from the casino will be immense and nothing will stop that project as Aqueduct is likely the largest developable tract of land in the outer boroughs. This is a huge graft project for Cuomo as he is the point man for the Malaysian Casino interest developing this project. It is the linchpin in his political empire as the backdoor money from Malaysia largely will fill his reelection coffers to pay for the commercials to bend the minds of the masses to ensure his reelection.
