Another economic base the city has grown in recent years is film/tv. Not only are there tax incentives for things filmed in NYC, you've major film organizations like IFP and Tribeca Film Festival that support independent film and therefore generate economic activity.

One of the good things Bloomberg did was realize the city needed to become less dependent on finance. He foresaw the economic collapse and had already moved the city to economically diversify.

Good thing because finance can move it's computer infrastructure anywhere they want at any time with little effort.Much harder for a tech based economy to be moved once the infrastructure in place,as it is in Boston and SF.Bloomberg grew up in Boston so he is probably acutely aware of the wonders of a tech based economy.

In addition to the West Side of Manhattan and Midtown, there are now a number of tech companies and jobs in places like DUMBO, LIC, Williamsburg, etc. In the old East River industrial area.

Fresh Direct is moving to South Bronx if it can pass final environmental reviews from the state and an appeal of the court case. (the nation's biggest online grocer). So perhaps as time goes by more tech stuff can even open up in the Bronx as it is comparatively cheap and has lots of old industrial space.

The computer infrastructure has already moved; the NYSE electronic trading system is in Mahwah, NJ. What keeps finance in NYC is people, not infrastructure. Same goes for tech; the reason tech stays in Silicon Valley is that's where the tech people are; it's a self-sustaining effect. There's a lot of tech in NYC too, but it seems very unlikely to supplant the Valley.
