I've read about this elsewhere. I guess this would also put an end to 'swipe beggars'

so pay your fare at the bank as a credit card bill at the end of the month instead of at the subway station as you go and come?

Metrocards are very wasteful. Bad for environment. Also there is a lot of additional upkeep with the machines and all that. They also don't allow for a smooth transfer to commmuter rail. It was never meant to be a long term thing, it was supposed to be a transitional type of thing but we all know how MTA operates. Im ready to move on to something better.

That being said i'd prefer to have the option of another card that you tap, a dummy only for that purpose, and that card would be linked to your bank account or a credit card. Don't like the idea of using my debit or credit card directly for that.

Hmm, I kinda like it. The Metro cards often have issues. I have at least 4 cards at home that suddenly got wiped out between transferring from the bus to the subway. They easily get damaged and now you have to pay $1 when you purchase a new card. I see it all the time (and it's happened to me) where you get to the subway and people have to swipe their card several times before the scanner reads it. Countless times extra fares were taken from my card and I've heard other commuters say the same thing. I would hope that this new technology doesn't have the same issues as the Metro cards.

Looks like the cost of manufacturing cards is what they want to eliminate.

Just re-read the article. They want to link it to a debit/credit card. It's in DC where they have the chip.
