I am all for expressing opinions, but when you encourage people to attack others...that is uncalled for, unnecesary, and dangerous. You should not encourage that sort of behavior either.

to those who say east harlem has the largest concentration of projects, you are seriously mistaken. brownsville brooklyn has the most public housing projects in the city owned by nycha. brownsville hosts a total number of 18 projects in that area. co-op city is the largest co-op developmemt in the world, and all they are is projects with more amenties than your average housing development. coc has about 42 buildings within that one development. so you go where you want to with this one.

east harlem is not really a bad area. it was more dangerous in the 80's to mid 90's than it is now. crime is actually lukewarm here. eh is bad for the lack of goods in the area, which with the addition of the east river mall, will hopefully fill. but one can live a decent life in the neighborhood. for those who are ranting about the projects seem to conveniently exclude the fact that, NYPD is practically a mainstay in a lot of the projects now. they have installed a heap of security cameras in the projects, and have set up mobile command units to patrol the grounds as well. in turn they have brought not all, but a lot of the crime down. i don't advocate living in public housing cause i have a "why limit yourself" attitude towards them, but to say east harlem is a dangerous neighborhood, no. you are seriously mistaken. to say east harlem is a area which leaves a lot to be desired, and with time will only get better, is a more accurate statement.

I agree....there is somewhat of an odd juxtaposition happening these days. I live directly across large housing projects..and there are constant street partols, unmarked cars, regular police cars, and those "stop and grab" vans always around. It is a good thing the way I see it...but when I venture to other neighborhoods, I feel that the patrols are not as common/vigilant...but this may just be my own perception.

I went out with a couple friends to a restaurant and some bars around 116th and 1st a couple weeks ago, and I was surprised by how nice the area was. I was expecting some bombed out barren wasteland of crackheads and stick-up kids, given East Harlem's reputation.
I'm a small, young, white male I didn't feel threatened at all. It was a warm day and there were a ton of people hanging out outside all night-- some people were even camped out in plastic lawn chairs, taking up the entire sidewalk in some places-- but nobody hassled me.
I'm guessing this specific area of EH isn't representative of the neighborhood as a whole, but it was a good time.

Harlem in general is the location for some of the country's most esteemed centers of higher education. That is, Columbia University, City University, etc. Lots of Noble winners.
