I am a 29 year old, white female, originally from a small country town in upstate ny, who just moved to the city a year ago ( have lived throughout the east coast previously, mostly in much smaller cities and/or suburbs) and I actually live here in East Harlem. IMO, it is not that bad. The biggest detractor is the distance from transportation (we live on Pleasant Ave, so far from the subway) and the lack of services ( lots of bodegas, few of anything else, no starbucks, not many good places to eat, though you do have the original Patsys!, no real shopping options, nothing but a little Fine Fare for a grocery store) but all these posts make it sound like it's a dangerous war zone up here. Granted, there are lots of housing projects and you have plenty of trash on the siewalks, and lots of people hang out on the streets, but I have never really felt in danger or even unsafe walking around here at any hour. Now, I do use common sense, stay on the main drag of 116 when I am coming home late at night, etc. but I don't think the main negatives about this neighborhood have to do with the safety issues anymore and I think most of the people I have read on this post are speaking from very generic and/or uninformed views of the neighborhood. would this be my first choice for neighborhoods to live in? not in a million years, but you can't beat the rents and size of the apartments compared to many other Manhattan neighborhoods and ultimately I don't feel unsafe living here. hope that helps.
Awesome post. Thanks for reassuring that East Harlem is not that really bad, as some people here make it out to be. Yeah, this is the good times of the late 2000's. No more East Harlem is burning or crack-heads wondering on the streets. Even the 'Gangs' seem so calm these days. Not a lot of shootings reports.

So dont criticize...you dont see the value but many do..which is why they HAVE SOLD for 7 figures..and countin.
like i said they thought they saw the value, now they complain. and many of the new developments that are going up in the rockaways are being sold to residents already in the area. the only new development that is going up across the street from public housing in the rockaway are 3 condo buildings next to hammels and the top price is $250K for 2 bdrm.

Yes they did see the value..however that does not make it perfect...and they are complaining about the projects because they want improvement. That is normal and a good thing.

Hmm..and how do you know that many of the new developments in the rockaways are being sold to residents already? You have access to the builder's clientele? You know many of the people buying? Or just your perception? Even if it is true, what does it matter whether new or old residents are buying..the point is people are buying...who cares who it is.

I am glad to hear that the top price is $250K for a 2 bedroom...many still dont't see the value of living there for $50,000...but nonetheless..there are many that do which is why they are selling. I am glad to hear it!

This is more reasonable for an area like that. I still don't understand why the need to go from poverty to luxury housing. People that can afford to spend alot have so many options. Young single people and young families starting out on a budget that may be from these areas originally have nothing offered to them.

Das that is true...but that is life. Just because an area is wealthy does not mean it should ALWAYS be that way...and just because an area is poor....does not mean it should ALWAYS be that way...and just because a nieghborhood is Irish does not mean it should ALWAYS be that way. This city is all about change, so this is yet another change.

Those single people/young families are not owed a place in these communities just because they are from there anymore than poor people are owed a place in the Upper East Side/Upper West side etc because they used to live there at some point. These young families/singles must now choose other places to live..and that helps spur changes in other neighborhoods. And that's what this city is all about...

116th St. is the dividing line of Spanish and East Harlem so it'll be a mix of both races. East Harlem and Spanish Harlem both have extremely high murder rates. The Bloods run East Harlem and are known for slitting innocent civilians throats from the streets to the subways. Not an area I'd recommend. West Harlem and Morningside Heights are fine, though.

Here's a video from East Harlem... (btw, ignore the title, Harlem is not NYC's most dangerous neighborhood)

What the Hell are you talking about? Not a lot of shooting reports my ***. East Harlem's been going crazy lately. In fact, they're estimating a Harlem crime INCREASE over the next year.

New York - America's Utopia...

And don't come here saying "you don't know what you're talking about because you're from Scarsdale." I'm more up-to-date on the latest crime rates and crimes reported than most people. I know a guy who patrols around the area the OP's talking about... Want me to ask him???

FutureCop....I think if there were "bloods running East Harlem and slitting innocent civilians throats from the streets to the subways" it would be on the news every minute of every hour...they would love that story. More of the same fear mongering....no you are not dodging knife wielding Bloods on your way to the train station!

Crime is higher in these areas, no doubt...but to say that getting your throat slit by a Blood on your way to the train is a remotely accurate portrayal of East/Spanish is ludicrous at best..and demonstrates your posts as just more fear mongering.

Ahh yes...FutureCop's is a great resource of knowledge about East Harlem....he lives in Scarsdale...reads the crime blotters...and knows a guy! Thanks for confirming what I already knew...

As I said..the area is higher in Crime.....but your extreme example of throats getting slit by bloods makes a great headline and inspires fear....but thats about it...it is far from an accurate portrayal for the community.
