Project buildings all over the place, random acts of violence, crappy bodegas, thugs hanging out on the corner. Thats what comes to my mind when I think of Spanish Harlem.

Not to be rascist or anything but I always thought the worst of Harlem was the black part.....meaning central and west. I never tought that the spanish section was the worse, in fact I tought it was the best. All these clips of Harlem ghetto's you see have mostly black thugs....not mexican/puerto ricans........
When I think of Harlem, I think of a black ghetto.........not a spanish ghetto.

you really don't have a clue, why would the black sections of harlem be worse than spanish sections? because they're black?
as long as I can remember east harlem was always poorer and more crime ridden than much of central harlem regardless of whatever the racial makeup of the residents.

I don't know how crime ridden it is, these days, but it is very unattractive because of how it grew into a mish-mash of 4-6 story walk-ups and housing projects. Lots of trash on the side-walks; and several areas where vacant lots seem like a bad place to walk by and/or live near.
Safest by the subway stops, but not a place I'd vouch for in a positive way.

Listen *******, watch your attitude............and yes the public image of Harlem has always been a crime filled ghetto made up of low-income african americans...........not really one of "spanish demographics".......personally I think Central Harlem worst. Take a look at most videos of Harlem hoods on youtube, you don't see many spanish people.
Just an observation.

I worked up in that area at night. It's real f#$ked up! It would be a good idea to grow a pair of eyes in the back of your head if you plan to walk around that area at night.

Are you from NYC? Have you lived here for a substantial period of time? If not, then please go somewhere else with your "but on Youtube, yada yada...the blacks" nonsense. Sorry, but some, probably most, of the poorest neighborhoods in the city are predominantly Latino ones, Washington Heights, Inwood, Grand Concourse area in the Bronx, Spanish Harlem, etc. Partly this is a result of the majority of the residents of these areas being recent immigrants, many of them being unskilled and at a disadvantage b/c of language.
Central and West Harlem are light years ahead of East Harlem in terms of livability for the middle class (regardless of race)
To the OP, stay out of El Barrio. It's way too poor.
