This happened also recently to a boy who was crossing northern boulevard to go to school. Part of the risks faced by people who raise families in urban mixed use areas.

What the heck are you talking about "mixed use areas". The kid and his father were crossing West End Avenue in front of their building. What other uses besides housing is over there?

What the heck do you not know? There is at least one supermarket, 2 hotels and numerous doctor's clinics within a few blocks away. Bet you there's more. You bring in these establishments, you also bring in more taxis and commercial vehicles. Go figure.

West End Avenue is hardly Fifth or even Lexington. Indeed at 97th Street it is mainly residential with some businesses, but they would not have been open at 930PM.
Taxi Driver Who Fatally Hit UWS Boy, 9, Failed to Yield, Police Say - Upper West Side - DNAinfo.com New York

The driver of the car behind the taxi that killed the boy saw the whole thing and indeed got out to lend assistance. He saw both the boy and his father crossing the street so how could the driver of the taxi in front of him not?

Hotels have guests that go in and out by taxi 24 hours a day. Commercial vans run deliveries before establishments open. There are clinics that open earlier than 9:30am. My own GP is in her clinic at Murray Hill by 8:00am.

Are you even surprised at the behavior of the taxi driver?

i use to live around there. Drivers always speed down west end cause it's a less busy road and they think not as many people walk around there.

Am not going down paths as to what is or is not located on West End Avenue because it does not matter as far as NY traffic laws are concerned. For this taxi driver to have it the boy with such force to have caused massive internal injuries means not only did he fail to yield to pedestrians, but likely zoomed into that turn.

No, am not surprised by the actions of the taxi driver, but quite honestly that goes for many others behind the wheel in NYC. All seem to suffer from the same addiction to cell phones or gadgets and thus are often driving while distracted.

Why wouldn't you go around paths about what's located there? That's a main reason why you have so many of these vehicles traversing the roads that you would not see in a suburban cul de sac.

And taxi drivers have been driving carelessly long before celphones have been around. They drive carelessly today even in cases when they don't use gadgets while driving. The truck driver who ran over that boy crossing Northern Blvd. was not using a gadget when the accident happened.

We know what the traffic laws are but honestly go around NYC and how often do you find vehicles running above 30 MPH, or not yielding to pedestrians in zebra crossings? What about delivery boys on bikes speeding in the opposite direction? Has been happening longer than anyone can remember.

West End Avenue is a common north to south route for those on the west side. And again it does not matter one bit why the guy was there, but that he failed to see and or yield.

From the way you are going on it would make a difference if the taxi had spotted a fare or was on his way to potentially fetch one, when in the grand scheme of things it matter not one bit.
