I appreciate the feedback from everyone even though it's not exactly what I was looking for. We are living together now and have been for a year. No, he has no not proposed but says he would marry me in a heartbeat if he knew I was ready. But I have a lot to think about; as far as uprooting my life.
The deal is like this: it's really up to your boyfriend. All the things you mentioned above are not an off the books requirement for being a broker and the reality is that most stock brokers work too much to be able to party like in the movies.
With that said, every vice you can possibly think of is readily available in NYC. And if your boyfriend is the type to give into temptation and partake then there is no better place to do that than in NYC.
So you know, just keep that in mind and really make sure you are doing the right thing for yourself. Nothing worse than breaking up and being alone in a new city, so just be careful and think about the move before you act
Cheating is never the reason for a breakup. What leads to the cheating is. Unfortunately, distance and frequency of seeing one another could be a reason. Frank and honest discussions about distance and frequency of seeing one another should be often after the move. You both should be prepared for the worst, but don't put impossible pressure on each other. Think positive, but don't pretend.
Stock broker is not a dream job, nobody dream of being a stock broker. People dream of making it big and have it easy by being a stock broker. The money does come easier than other jobs but it also has a price.
Get ready for a divorce or breakup, because any retail broker in NYC wants to live the high life. Even if they don't they're surrounded by guys that do. My boss once said if they started mandatory drug testing 1/2 the brokers would be kicked out for sure. If you go to any of the new year parties there's booze, booze, drugs, more drugs, women, and whores. If this is what he wants to do you might as well prepare to find a new man and save the inevitable heartache.
Your man is gonna be worried about bringing you out to socializing events because there are too many temptations he's gonna be afraid to take you out and you're gonna worry that he's cheating on ya too. That's why most brokers I've met are either on their 3rd wives and still have girls they're supporting on the side as well as a coke habit.
Okay, you and he are probably overstating his job. Sounds like he will be working for some chop shop making cold calls. It won't be some high flying job making millions and popping bottles at clubs with strippers. He'll likely be moving back before you get a chance to come here. And how exactly are you going to come to New York? Live with his four 'broker' buddies? You and him going to get your own place? Well, he'll probably clear about $30k his first year.
What you've described is a dying business. Maybe you've just described it wrong, and he has an advanced degree and will be working with a hedge fund. But what you've described is 1980's Wall Street that doesn't exist anymore
Lol Wall Street is not that glamourous. Stock brokers typically don't make that much. Can he party? Sure. But it is not like he will live this awesome lifestyle full of temptations right after he gets into the city. By the time he makes enough to do so he will probably be having his mid life crisis...

This is most accurate--- without giving his name tell us what company he was recruited by and what his title is and most importantly what starting compensation are they talking about,
