When people from Brooklyn go to Manhattan they say they are going to "the city." They don't say they are going to Manhattan or New York county.
sure if they are over 80 years old--- no one who lives in Brooklyn says that anymore--- what they say is
Yuck ! I have to go to Manhattan to work. I wish I could get a good job in Brooklyn.
How can you identify one aspect of culture and say then that Brooklyn is the epicenter! More artists live in Brooklyn (what evidence do you have of this anyway) therefore ignore all other culture...this one is the only one that matters! LOL!
If you want the latest what? Latest people living off their parents? Latest kids pretending to be poor? Latest drug "culture"? Latest posers and wannabes? Latest suckers paying 5x more than anyone else would? Latest transplants following TV shows to mimic?
You gave me a good laugh.
That's why I stated - in terms of producing culture. Some people will argue that merely exhibiting and auctioning culture as you will find in Manhattan is a small aspect of culture.
Where do you think Industry City is located? Brooklyn Art Space? Too many arts spaces and production hubs are already based in Brooklyn. That's what a lot of people don't get when they immediately associate Brooklyn with hipsters. It's an industry in itself and their work gets used commercially, not just for posers. Does Manhattan or the Bronx have anything similar in scale?
I'm wondering why you seem to never have heard of this before. Or does it make you defensive when this reality is brought up?
It is really surprising to have you ask the question whether Manhattan has anything of the scale of culture, or rather production of culture, than Brooklyn. You either have never left Brooklyn, or are basically dismissing as irrelevant every theater show and the entire broadway district, every world renowned museum, every international culinary/fashion/theater event....the list goes on and on.....ignore all that! LOL! The world comes to NYC to experience the culture of Brooklyn Brewery and Industry city!
You do not understand. A lot of what gets sold and exhibited in Manhattan and elsewhere in the world gets MADE in Industry City and other artistic hubs in Brooklyn. Even corporations go to Brooklyn to buy designs. Or maybe you think Industry City is merely a speck in stark contrast to Kingsbridge Armory, truly a cultural wonder in the Bronx.
Theater district is "culture" if you are a tourist. The biggest hits you see there like Lion King and Phantom are replicas of productions that were made nearly a century ago. Few are actually new concepts. Watch Turandot and you'll understand and wonder why so many deep pocketed musicals could come up with very few new ideas.
ABC was covering the aftermath of the snowstorm and interviewing people on the street. They commented on how the UES wasn't plowed or cleared properly and Brooklyn was. They interviewed a hipster in Brooklyn and here is what he said: "Brooklyn is now the cultural epicenter of NYC and Manhattan is second class and they just have to get used to it."
Oh, really?? Brooklyn is the "epicenter" because the transplanted hipsters cannot afford Manhattan?
Ok you are right..Brooklyn is the cultural epicenter..and Manhattan is just the staging area and has no cultural producers on par with Brooklyn.
Now you get it ! The sad part is the elitist mob from Manhattan are the ones who don't cross the bridge and you know why because there are too many people there who don't look like them and they are afraid of the boogey man/ People in brooklyn on the whole are much more real than those in most of Manhattan

This whole "Brooklyn only offers a hipster scene" is REALLY getting old. Honestly. Do you even come into Brooklyn or do you just read blogs?

Fashion, music, not sure but won't be surprised if Brooklyn is ahead. Someone else can verify.
Definitely not on the same scale for fashion (production) though Alexander Wang is bringing is Fashion Week show to Brooklyn on Feb 8th, so that's a first step! Music on the other hand is another story. Brooklyn based bands from American Authors to Matt and Kim and a lot of others (I believe the Band Fun. as well) are what people are listening to on iTunes.
Some companies coming into Brooklyn (or already here) from Manhattan: Art Partner will be at City Point (which is a huge artist management company think Vogue), Knitting Factory, etc. Neiman Marcus is coming (first in NYC), We have a Barneys flagship here. . . other retailers are coming into the borough because they see the demand.
I don't see the issue with Brooklyn becoming great (for the general public and more people), when people deny what's happening in Brooklyn it makes them look silly. With Brooklyn coming into prominence people will have an even more of a selection of things to do. When it all boils down to it Brooklyn is still New York. It may not seem like much here but international Brooklyn is the hottest thing. . .
The last link are restaurants around the world where there name is Brooklyn related like Brooklyn Hide Bagels in Sydney, "Fort Greene" in Tokyo and Brooklyn Café in Paris.
