What kind of lifestyle can someone that is earning $60k-$70k a year expect to live in NYC?

Can the following requirements be met:

  • Live in a decent apartment in a decent neighborhood.
  • Be able to go out to bars, clubs, & lounges one to two times a week.
  • Be able to go out to eat a few times a week.
  • Be able to travel for vacation.
  • Be able to save money.

completely depends on two things...

(1) debt you have

(2) need for a car

If you have minimum/no debt and can ditch the care you will be in pretty decent shape.

70k would you bring you a take home pay of about $3400 per month after taxes.

Depends what type of eating out you want to do. What you consider a decent neighbourhood which clubs or bars you wish to go to.

You can not eat at erminia and bobby vans and drink at 230 fifth.

I would say if you are willing to live with roommates, then all of that is definitely possible. If you intend to have your own apartment in a "nice" neighborhood, its possible but you will definitely be on a tight budget with the luxuries.

A definite yes to all of the above.I did it with no problem and managed to save a lot at the same time.Just avoid trendy neighborhoods where rents are ridiculously high.

Just don't spend more on rent than you need to--if you're in your early to mid 20s I'd recommend roommates, if you must live alone look at less trendy neighborhoods and keep your rent well under 1500.

A friend of mine in in that income bracket, mid-$60k income working for a non-profit. No car (uses ZipCar), no debt, lives alone in 1BR in Queens.
