Parents Say Queens Teacher Wouldn’t Let Kids Write About Malcolm X For Black History Month Assignment « CBS New York

Do you agree or disagree with the parents' reaction to this?

I agree with the parents
the teacher needs a LESSON
Malcolm X is just as much a part of Black History as Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks

I notice in the story that the class in question is the 4th grade. It's possible the teacher thinks students that young might not fully understand why Malcolm X would support violent means. Just a guess. Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King might offer a more appropriate (sanitized?) homework topic?

If some kid in the 4th grade wants to research and write about Malcom X or whomever they should be allowed to as long as the parents ok.

what the teacher thinks is irrelevant
and if FOURTH graders dont know who Malcolm X is ....sad in itself
I dont know how anyone can SANITIZE Black History in America
when it starts with Slavery

I don't know how much contact you have with young people, but I would bet most 4th graders don't know who Malcolm X is. They're much more likely to know who Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King are, largely because King's and Parks's histories are less problematic. All history is sanitized, even Black history. How many people today actually know about King's foibles?

Isn't this an argument for allowing the student to do the project on Malcolm X so others can learn from it?

All fourth graders should know who Malcolm X is they would learn about him same time they learned about Martin Luther King in the first grade and I don't agree that history is sanitized either since we learn
Columbus and the Indians in first grade too
History class is not the place for Santa and the
Easter bunny
