Depends on how open minded you are with things. Castle Hill/Soundview are bad, but they are just as bad as other areas in America. I usually just stayed in my little West Farms area in the Bronx anyways

I use to live 535 Havemeyer Castle Hill
It's been many many years since I've been back to Castle Hill, but I can remember it being so fun; especially in the summer time. I really miss all of my friends. To me Castle Hill holds a lot of great memories for me.

I use to live on the 13th floor in 535; of course this was about 20 years ago; but I still keep in contact with my girl Michelle.

castle hill avenue & randalls side of the projects was a warzone before...randalls ave probably was the dangerous strip that connected from soundview houses to castle hill houses..both areas calmed down

People get robbed an killed in mid town Manhattan does that make that part of town ghetto. Its funny how when people see brown faces the first things that comes to mind ghetto, gangbanger, drug dealer. Come on people its 2008. Crime is colorless and happens everywhere. Especially in a populated city such as NY.

It's not south Bronx.
But Soundview has alot of housing projects. This really affects the area and makes it high crime. Like alot of people have said, it's not Fordham, with block after block of tenements but it is more similar to East NY. I heard that the eastern half of Soundview is actually pretty nice. It's western half, closer to Hunts Point/Longwood has gone to ****.

People not familiar with the Bronx should realize that, in reality, if the rent is cheap, the area may be questionable. Second, it is true that even in the worst parts, there are decent buildings where little to no criminal activity is happening. Conversely, even in better areas, there are buildings/ blocks/ etc, that are known for such things as drug activity and everything that goes along with it. Third, place yourself, say, in the middle of say, the Soundview Houses. Not such a great area. But less than a quarter mile away you've got a gated community of townhouses on the water which are very nice with owners who obviously care very much about their property.
The point is that the Bronx is the Bronx. There is no real 'hidden treasure' although certain areas may not be as bad as you had thought.

I read that the Son Of Sam was born in the early 50's and if i remember correctly he stayed there until the late 60's. It was Stratford Avenue near Westchester Ave, which is the western portion of Soundview that Super mario describes. The book described that the family left in the late 60's. As the book puts it "the family bade farewell to their old neighborhood, completely decaying, deteriorated and filth ridden". So according to this book and to answer jp03's question, that area was bad decades ago
