Okay with very small apartment
Yes, it's another question about renting an apartment in NYC! What would rent be like if I could tolerate living in the smallest apartment possible with a community type bathroom/shower? I've lived in a college dormitory so this would not bother me. I would want to live in Manhattan as well.
Please no crude remarks, as I am merely a young midwestern girl looking for something reasonable until I obtain my nursing degree.
Any info will help! Thank you!

Just heard about a rooming house in Queens where immigrant limo drivers are 'packed' in a house. They pay rent for their room for only 12 hours/day. They sleep in shifts. Someone else uses the room in the other 12 hours. The house is infested with bedbugs.
So. . .please be sure of what you can 'tolerate' as sometimes conditions for those who are not well off are not good at all.
I have heard, however, that there are some dorm type hostels for women in Manhattan. I believe they have been mentioned on the housing board on craiglist. You could try doing a search, or maybe google would bring it up. Again, though, bedbugs are a huge problem in all major cities now and I imagine dorm/hostel situations are particularly prone to them.
I hope your post is not trolling. Lately I am beginning to wonder!

Thank you for the information. Yea, I'm not sure I could deal with the whole bed bug situation. I guess I'll just have to wait until I actually have my nursing degree and have saved some money to move there!
And I don't even know what trolling is so...I hope I'm not doing that?

no, apparently you are not trolling. You can find the definition on line but basically it means someone who joins a board, makes up a story to get a reaction out of the others on the board - kind of like riling people up or starting a fight and then walking away.
There was another poster today whose story did not add up, and she got many long responses. She may have not been trolling either (just confused), but in general there are people on here trying to help (even though we are all biased in our own way) and it's frustrating if someone 'trolls' and wastes time that could be used to help someone who is asking an honest question.

I see. My question was honest. I didn't realize the living conditions would be that harsh. The only reason I asked that question on here was because bed bugs are not something one would typically advertise when trying to close a deal. Your response was exactly what I was looking for... an honest one! Again, my intentions were not to rile anyone up and I'm sorry if you feel your time was wasted, but thanks anyway for the honest information.

In 1999, I stayed in a place you could stay in 2 weeks at a time. It was $125 a week, community bathrooms, very small crappy bedroom, no linens provided but a roach-infested mini-fridge, and at was on something like 110th St., West side. There were people who seemed to be staying there longer. I don't know how that worked. It was pretty scary and awful but I survived while I found something better.

Our time would have been wasted if you *were* trolling, but since you weren't, it's not really a waste of time.
And not every place is going to have bedbugs, but the fact is that they are definitely on the rise and a rooming house is a place where I would be very afraid they would end up.

Hey intheseshoes, thanks for your info. From what you guy's have said, these are not ideal places to live. I guess I should have been more clear in my initial post by saying that I do not require a lot of space, and while the listings on craigslist are tempting, I'm not sure if I trust the whole random roommate concept. I was under the impression that these hostel/dorm places were somewhat decent...guess I was very wrong.

If you've already be admitted to a nursing school, check with the admissions office. Some have housing.
