I think they have one of the better unions out there, no doubt about it. Just take a look at the new contract benefits:

What do the rest of you guys think?

The test in 2003 drew more than 40,000,22,000 eligibles for the last test.

Mayor Bloomberg leaves office in 2009,the guy is more of a businessman than a politician, back in 2003 he actually laid off a few hundred sanitation workers which were eventually rehired. The new mayor will have an impact on the amount of new hires for the sanitation dept.

The union's president, Harry Nespoli, said that negotiating with the Bloomberg administration over the past three years was extremely difficult.
"There were times that I got totally disgusted," Mr. Nespoli said.
"This is by far the toughest contract that I ever sat down at."(2005)

There were 11,164 workers on the force in 1971
the earliest year for which records were immediately available. Back then they had 3 men on a truck. 7,899 uniformed workers and supervisors today.

Of course they have an excellent union, still for the new hires you are going to need a second job(part time)$31,000 yr in NYC is borderline welfare. They give you Sunday and a rotating weekday off, plus depending on how far your route is from home you should be home before the pm rush hour begins...6am-2pm,7am-3pm shifts.

Also if u take a look at the last couple couple of contract negotiations in '03, '05, & '07, their top pay has gone from $48k to $57k to $67k. I think that's pretty good negotiations in comparison to other unions.

I thought overtime went only to the senior guys...I can imagine guys making $100,000 yr with overtime, especially with the big snow storms we had the last few winters. Thing is when it comes time to collect the garbage again, they will have at least twice the amount of garbage to collect. Double time on Sundays,I believe they work 12 hour shifts when it snows a lot,but you are in the truck all of the time.

SanMansBro...How do they determine your pension? Does it go by your last years pay? Also is it correct that they can't force you to retire after your 20 years? I have heard of guys working 30+ years with DSNY,can see why they would want to keep on working.

6000 hires is not accurate. They hired 758 in 2006, 754 in 2005, 413 in 2004. I don't know about 2007
