RIP
"This morning we received sad news about Nelson Diaz, a 23-year veteran of our Sanitation Department. While working his route in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx, he collapsed and was taken to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, where he passed away. Sanitation Worker Diaz was respected by his colleagues for his dedication and devotion to duty. I spoke to his wife Ada this morning and expressed my heartfelt condolences to her and her children, Nelson Jr. and Omar, while also expressing our gratitude for his many years of service. We have lost one of the unsung heroes of our City, who work tirelessly to make New York a better place for the rest of us."
- Statement from Michael Bloomberg
"Sanitation Worker Nelson Diaz will be missed by his colleagues and friends at Bronx District 4. He was a hard-working and well-liked employee who cared for his City, for the neighborhood he served and for his loving family. His sudden loss is a blow to New York's Strongest." - Statement from Commissioner Doherty

LOL! everything you learned in CDL goes out the window when you leave FBF. As long as you can drive and not coming close to hitting cars they won't say much.

so far in my experience, they know you are new and on probation. They will look out for you. As long as you come on time and do your job they will not bother you. Unless you live in the bronx, i suggest you stay out of the bronx! But then again you will most likely get the bronx since just about everyone who got sent here put transfers out already.

You get a mix of both types or all types. A holes and cool supervisors that didn't forget where they came from. On you fbf driving if you remember to turn on your pivot point (the lite inbetween the two rear wheels) on turns you should be fine. Also when going thru the obstacle coarse slower is better because the truck will turn tighter (momentem of speed will make the truck or any vehicle turn wider).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Press Release # 08-37
Monday, August 11, 2008
Vito A. Turso/Matthew LiPani
Sanitation Nabs 11 Illegal Dumpers in July, Impound Vehicles
Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty announced today that the Department of Sanitation's Citywide Illegal Dumping Task Force seized and impounded 11 vehicles that were involved in incidents of illegal dumping during the month of July 2008. The DSNY Task Force, composed of plainclothes Sanitation Police Officers, monitors known dumping locations and seizes the vehicles of illegal dumpers caught in the act of violating the law.
The July 2008 impoundments included seven in Brooklyn, two in the Bronx, and two on Staten Island. When the Department catches an illegal dumper, Sanitation Police Officers can make arrests, if warranted, and impound the vehicles used in the illegal dumping incidents. The owner of the vehicle is subject to severe fines and will be held responsible for the actions of the operator of the vehicle regardless of being present during the act. Currently, fines start at $1,500 and range as high as $20,000 per summons. In addition, the illegal dumper must pay the city a cleanup cost for the illegally dumped material, generally about $150 per cubic yard.
Commissioner Doherty said, "Illegal dumping is against the law. If you do it, you will get caught. The Illegal Dumping Task Force is the city's front line defense against illegal dumpers who shamefully use our streets and lots as their personal dumping grounds."
One of Sanitation's critical resources in combating illegal dumping is the Illegal Dumper Tips Program, which was established to help get residents involved without placing them at risk from the dumpers. For more information on the program, residents should call 311 or visit the DSNY web site at DSNY - The City of New York Department of Sanitation.

Yes The union president spoke to us today about the fellow sanitation worker who had a heart attack in the line of duty.... He actually left a little earlier than he was supposed to so he can go and take care of things.. But he did touch on alot of topics that had to do with our union and stuff.. Definately gave you a sense of pride for the job . Also made me realize how much we actually get for doing the job we do ...
Busterwolf im in group C2... seat number 92 and i was in uniform .
Tomorrow first day of driving for us . Cant wait .. i was bored to death last 2 days...

From the New York Post:
TRASH MAN DIES ON JOB
By DAVID SEIFMAN
Posted: 3:52 am
August 12, 2008
A 60-year-old sanitation worker who had just told his partner that he felt "a little lightheaded" died of an apparent heart attack yesterday in The Bronx.
Officials said Nelson Diaz, a 23-year Sanitation Department veteran, was collecting in Mount Eden at about 7:30 a.m. when he fell ill.
Jessey Massey, 62, suggested that his partner rest in their truck, but five minutes later, he noticed him slumped over.
Bronx-Lebanon Hospital doctors couldn't revive the married father of two and grandfather of one.
Mayor Bloomberg called Diaz's wife, Ada, to express his condolences.
"I told her the city is a better place because of Nelson and the men and women of the Sanitation Department," the mayor said.

On shift out of town means your either being transported or you are transporting yourself to another garage. Or you get your orders for the next day to report to a garage other than your own. Word of advice when reporting to a manhattan garage report in proper uniform. Name on your shirts proper hat and boots as well as under shirt of proper color. They sometime get to busting chops of not having black socks. Yes black socks are suppose to be part of proper uniforms.

Only daily paper I saw this mentioned in was the Post and it actually made it onto page 5. It was also in the Chief today.
Couldn't tell ya if it was on TV last night because that storm knocked out my cable and net service all day and night yesterday!
Edit: I see Kuai just posted the Post write-up above

7 days experience and they already know supervisors WOW. Boy are they in for a world of hurt. Wait till a supervisor knows they are proby and has them doing envelopes or things the shouldn't be doing. Just remember that when a supervisor asks you to do something, that whatever it is they must put it on your 350 also your last orders are what
