a "tissue" is a steady spot that noone can bump you out of even if there senior to you. theres a GARAGE UTILITY TISSUE,WRECKER TISSUE, AND BROOM TISSUES in my garage. IF A TISSUE OPENS IN YOUR GARAGE LETS SAY 4-12 G.U. TISSUE IT WILL BE POSTED FOR 2 WEEKS.EVERYONE WHO WANTS IT WILL SIGN UP FOR IT.AFTER THE 2 WEEKS IS UP THE SENIOR MAN WHO SIGNED FOR IT KEEPS IT FOR AS LONG AS THEY WANT.

Yes that is correct.. also have no "K" Intrastate restriction. I went to my local DMV today to pick up the NYS Commercial Drivers Manual,a lot easier to study from than online, have been taking practice CDL tests online as well.
I noticed that the DSNY trucks in Queens West have a NJ DEP #,I am aware that some trucks go to NJ landfills(Newark,Totowa, etc) after their route is completed. Other trucks unload at transfer stations in the boroughs.
My question is do they have "relay" drivers who drive the trucks into New Jersey?

Yes it is free, when you walk inside the DMV office wait in the information line(line moves quickly, there were 3 clerks working behind the counter). I waited for about 5 minutes and this was at noon at the College Point DMV,just ask for the cdl manual and they will give it to you no questions asked. It is about the same size as the yellow pages but not as thick of course(around 88 pages divided into different sections.
This is a free forum site isn't it? Google anything about the DSNY exam and this forum comes up on top, glad that I started it.

yes the relay drivers go to new jersey. usually on the 4 pm to 12am shift or 7pm to 3am shift. i was under 21 when i started so i never had to go to new jersey, that really got the senior guys mad because they would have to go to new jersey and i would stay in brooklyn so they would call the union on me lol now with the new contract you have to be 21 to start this way everyone can drive to new jersey.

haha, well Wreckerman to us who took the test last summer you are a senior guy to us. Is it true that you don't always work the same route day in and day out? They rotate you on different shifts and on different routes when you are a new hire.
Do they try to give you a route close to where you live or do you just go where there is an opening? I wish they had online maps of sanitation routes from all the 5 boroughs,I know that there are 59 "Sanitation districts".
Thanks for giving us answers Wreckerman.

its cool..i was just thinking that as time progresses the two threads will become very long with many topics hidden inside.by starting our own forum dedicated just to dsny stuff we could have a different thread for every topic...ie cdl, phyiscal test, advice, call ups whatever.. http://www.freeforums.org/

ya as a new hire you probably will be working all different shifts and all different routes but if you can grab a tissue that opens you can stay with that tissue and you wont bounce all over the place.than you can give up the tissue when you feel you have enough seniority to get a steady shift.Youll hear it a million times "it only gets better" which is true the pay increases and the work gets steady so if you have to bounce your first couple of years dont worry because it only gets better.
They try to put guys close to home but it rarely happens so if you have a hook i suggest you call them and tell them what garage you want to go to.If not than you can just put a transfer in to the garage you want to go to.Which garage do you want to go to?
