This message is for guys waiting to come on the job. The department will begin hiring before 2012. There are men on the job from the 87',88',89',90', year classes that will run into retirement, as they have ran up the tonnage amounts of these long/heavy routes (bx). The city wants more with less. more sick, lodi, and retirees are expected with more tonnage, and accountability. They are not playing any more. Good luck.

Default Keep it Real!!!

This message is for all you (experienced) San Men. As we continually glorify this Job (which keeps us basically above the poverty line for NYC Income Standards), let the new guys know that this is a man's job with real responsibility. Safely operating a Garbage Truck, dealing with the rude public, unprofessional bosses, clueless supervisors, and the petty games the boro plays when we begin to work like human beings (and not load the truck like animals). Its all a fact of life when you're a San Man. This is a good job. You wont get rich. You will keep food on the table, and a roof overhead.

Ok so in otherwords its pretty pointless to take the test in 2011 then if its going to expire in a year being people who took it before will get first dibs anyway leaving basically no chance for whoever took it after

The test in 2011 will be established in 2012 and expire im 2016.... The current list expires in 2012 and then the new list takes effect..... They give the test a year before the old one expires

No you want to take the test in 2011 if you want to get hired after 2012 up until 2016.

I have a very high list #(5,650). It might sound like I am desperate to get this job but I am older than most on the list(39)...with all due respect to Joe8 who was hired last year at 51 or 52.

Just a thought, but instead of raising the retirement age to 50 or 55,just raise the minimum age to get hired to 30.

Listen to retired sanman he knows what he is talking about. The best thing that could happen to many of you who want the job and didnt get it is for dsny not to hire for a few years. The longer they dont hire the more of a chance of the list going further.

Me: Everytime I bring up the subject of a list freeze or a list extension people either don't know or play the stupid. I even emailed the commissioner of DCAS and got a robotic reply like if the person was reading from a script. Lets see how it all plays out....

This is not a normal job for your body, they will probably never raise the minimum age above 21 (due to CDL regs) because as you get older you are going to feel the pain more than a young 21 year old. Although this week I was on the truck 3 times all above 13 tons each day and feel great. But I know if I was 21 or so I'd feel even better. And don't worry no offense was taken, hit 52 this past Sat.
