That is the list#'s that they reached,6,000+. Not everybody below that number during the last test was hired. People get passed up and or disqualified for many different reasons. C'mon now,do you actually believe they would have hired 6,000 new workers in just 4 years? That is close to the entire sanitation dept workforce.

I am sticking to what I read in the Chief, the article said they expect to hire 2,000 new workers from exam #6063.

i think most overtime is because of snow and the pickup backups it creates.special events like parades ,new years eve ,mets ticker tape parade(i could dream) add to overtime.

didnt the city reduce the number of workers being hired at some point?if so thats not too strong of a union.i thought they traded hiring new workers for higher salaries.i may be wrong.none the less the salary is impressive.

I've read this before. But i have a question. Since when did they start giving a PSYCHOLOGICAL exam???

Forty-thousand people took the written test. A much smaller number was eligible for the physical test. Then there was a battery of medical and even psychological exams, followed by days at the department's personnel division filling out reams of paperwork, including a 20-page booklet that took me an entire hour to complete

I just posted the same link to that article on the other DSNY thread. Well I believe they want to see how you handle stress. Sanitation workers work in an outdoor environment, have to deal with weather, impatient drivers, they represent the city so to speak. I don't think they would want somebody with a bad temper driving a $100,000+ sanitation truck through city streets.

The psych exams are most likely written or you just have to answer questions. Just stay calm during the interview process, nothing to worry about. My main concern is being able to drive a Sanitation truck on narrow city streets.

Here are the actual numbers: They hired 758 in 2006, 754 in 2005, 413 in 2004. If you don't believe me, just look at their annual reports - I am posting the link below. When you open the reports, just scroll down a couple of pages to page 15 on the 2006 annual report, also page 15 on the 2005 annual report, & page 26 on the 2004 annual report. The page that has their "Personnel Management Division" listed; on that page it will tell u everything they have as far as workers, supervisors, civilains, chiefs, etc...And more importantly, how many new people they've hired & promoted. Hey listen, I'm NOT trying to **** on anyone's parade, but these are the actual numbers. Take a look for yourselves: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dsny/html/reports/annual.shtml

dsny site..
The current starting salary of a Sanitation Worker is $30,000 per year. The current labor agreement provides for periodic increases to a maximum of $67,141 after 5 1/2 years. In addition to the basic annual wages, Sanitation Workers may also earn differential payments based on their specific assignment and overtime.

dsny rant link....
Copsandwich....How much time do u have on the NYPD? I got some info from my friend. 12 holidays off a year, every sunday off & rotating day. Top pay at end of contract march 2011 is $67,000, long is $1,495 , $900 for uniform allowance and if you work on the truck piccking up garbage you will be getting $63 a day additional.

At end of contract you will make about $85,000---PLUS TIP$$$----- with no night diff or OT. If you work a Sunday or your other day off it is all DOUBLE TIME but there isnt as much OT as NYPD until the snow hits. They are paid weekly. Once you become a senior guy with 15 or more years you can work a sinlge man truck and make about $96 a day

After we get the 3, 3.15, 4,4,4,4 ( 6 year deal) we will be at top pay of

$74,062--Base
$3,700--long at 5 years
$3,133--holiday pay
$1,100 --uniform

$82,000 no night diff or OT

i have heard my friend talk about it but i never got too deep into it..ill ask next time.
