i hope when they open it back up we get a sweet deal. we laughed when nypd started at $25,000, now they start at 42 and we got 31 and we won't even be close for a while. so frustrating. anyway how was your ojt pipez?

???Huh

NYPD's contract runs 4 years from 2006 to 2010. They were always behind up until yesterday. Even when they got the arbitration award a couple of months ago (which covered 2004 to 2006), they were still working without a contract. I believe FDNY's contract runs on a 2 year time scale.

If your going to compare compensations among the 4 major nyc departments, the "natural pecking order" amongst them when everyone is working under an updated contract is as follows:
1) FDNY - highest paid Firefighter Benefits and Salary
2) NYPD
Benefits & Salary | NYPD (broken link)
3) DOC
Job Opportunities - Department of Correction
4) DSNY - lowest paid

The beauty about DSNY always was that u only had to work 3 to 4 hours a day to earn an 8 hour paycheck unlike these other departments. I remember Giuliani use to complain about it when he was mayor.

Unfortunately now though, alot of the fringe benefits DSNY once had to offer is going to the wayside.

These last 2 contracts for the nypd covered years 2004 thru 2009 Their top pay is now 10000 dollars plus ahead of us. They have also gotten back most of what they gave up in arbitration. Our contract runs till 2011 and our top pay is 67 grand. When the NYPD negotiates its next deal when their contract expires next year expect top pay to be around 84,000 almost 17000 grand more than us at current scale. The union has a big negotiating session ahead of them.

another thing that sucks too is that all us new guys missed the supervisors exam, so now we'll be stuck with no new promotional test for at least a couple of years.

it wouldn't matter since you need to be on the job for 2 years before you can get promoted.
