First of all, I'm an ignorant southerner, so don't stone me! Lol.

I looked at this 4br 3.5ba home in New York for $1,295,000.
8127 Utopia Pkwy, Jamaica, NY 11432 is For Sale - Zillow
http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/81...32080281_zpid/
Lot size: 6,403 sqft

I present to you this 4br 2.5ba home across the street from my block (Alabama): $324,900
681 Idlewild Cir, Birmingham, AL 35205 is For Sale - Zillow
Lot size: 0.66 acres = 28,749.6 sqft
This home is one of the more expensive houses in this good neighborhood. You can find 3 and 4 bedroom houses in this area (not as grand or historic) for around 100 to 150k. The largest house on this block is a big pink mansion with a pool and some bee hives (I still have no idea what fool lives here) has an estimated value of $1.39 million.

There are several houses in this area hitting above the $500k range. I'm live in an apartment in this area and only pay $495 a month for a 2br apartment. Everyone laughs at me because I consider $495 to be ALOT. I heard that a 2 br in New York would cost over $1000 even in the ghetto. Is that true?

Yes it is true but there is also Ripple versus a fine bottle of wine. We understand that you can fine nice homes in places like Birmingham--- the only problem is they are in Birmingham. If you are happy there I suggest you not look anymore at New York real estate. I am afraid you will never get it.

PS the average price of a two bedroom apartment in Manhattan to purchase is about $1 million dollars. The area you chose to look at would be considered less than desirable

Try looking for houses in Malba, Forest Hills Gardens, Jamaica Estates or Douglaston. These are all in Queens.

For the really expensive houses, look in Manhattan, or in Brooklyn: Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Park Slope.

I heard that Birmingham is one of the booming metros in the US. Can you still get a 2-br apt for $500? Howe about 3-br in a decent neighborhood?

Many people here do not "make it." They spend north of 50% of their take-home on rent and consider that a good deal.

And just think about how fun it is to spend all that money to live next to insufferable, pretentious, stuck up people like blimin who think they're better than you because you're from Birmingham.
