Okay, so I love NYC. I've been there couple of times, but I've never stayed in a hotel, apartment, or house there.
But I hear people complain about roaches constantly! Is this a big worry here? Is this just a tv cliche ? I've never seen a cockroach here, but I'm from a town of 150 people in illinois. Big difference.
How do I keep cockroaches outta my house/apartment??

I've had the occasional cockroach over the years. We've put boric acid powder in the trash bin to prevent them, and have a couple traps under counters. However, if you happen to live with disgusting neighbors, you could inherit a problem no matter how careful and meticulous you are. It depends on the type of building you're in and who your neighbors are. Personally I don't know anyone that has had major issues, but I do remember a couple posts on here that you could search for discussing in further detail.

I don't get how a lot of people get all creeped out by roaches. Yes, they are a nuisance but I equate them on a level with house flies. But I don't hear people get as creeped out by house flies and they are just as dirty as roaches.

As long as you keep your apartment clean, not leave any food or dirty dishes out and fumigate every now and then you should be ok.

You know it's time to get out and see the world when you think cockroaches running around your house is no big deal.

Then I guess you could never live in any major city-- I just love people who represent that their living conditions are so pristine--- and people who have roaches in this city know it has nothing to do with the cleanliness of the home. Only an uninformed dodo would believe that. It sort of follows the same logic as bedbugs which people who are coming here think are homegrown in NYC when in fact they most often are brought in by tourists who travel here.
