Can someone explain to me why we're using gas here in 2014? Yes, I realize these events are realtivley infrequent considering, but the danger is there. Especally headscratching is having gas lines out in earthquake country in CA. Knowing ConEd, this is similar to the 100 year old electrical pipes that haven't been replaced in ages. Difference is electricity doesn't explode in such a manner

Many buildings still buy steam from power plants. Certain things are just too expensive/entrenched to change

Yes we know this is coming next.

Positive thoughts going out to everyone affected by this!

I am a regular commuter into NYC via Metro North, and I have to say, I am extremely grateful that I am currently unemployed and didn't have to commute today... Lots of stranded Metro North customers today.

Gonna be some seriously jammed lexington line trains tonight as well as bumper to bumper on the FDR. I would just rent a car for a day and go through Queens if I lived upstate or in Connecticut

^ My friend hired a car service right after the explosion happened, just to be safe. She's lucky she secured it.

No. Seriously bad idea. Take the subway, a taxi, or even a bus to another station(Bronx/New Rochelle/etc.).
