Can someone explain to me why we're using gas here in 2014? Yes, I realize these events are realtivley infrequent considering, but the danger is there. Especally headscratching is having gas lines out in earthquake country in CA. Knowing ConEd, this is similar to the 100 year old electrical pipes that haven't been replaced in ages. Difference is electricity doesn't explode in such a manner

Excellent point! Another thought, however, aren't there nuclear plants in CA?
Back on topic:Wishing the best for all those families displaced by this tragedy.
Could this possibly be replaced with a 40-story modern apartment building? I think if the adjoining buildings were damaged as well, they can just be demolished and the lots included in the replacement.
Positive thoughts going out to everyone affected by this!
I am a regular commuter into NYC via Metro North, and I have to say, I am extremely grateful that I am currently unemployed and didn't have to commute today... Lots of stranded Metro North customers today.

Gonna be some seriously jammed lexington line trains tonight as well as bumper to bumper on the FDR. I would just rent a car for a day and go through Queens if I lived upstate or in Connecticut

No. Seriously bad idea. Take the subway, a taxi, or even a bus to another station(Bronx/New Rochelle/etc.).
