Just curious, if you are not an elderly or physically challenged, when you look for an apartment, will an apt. on 3+th floor in a walk-up building a big minus? Is that a more or less important factor than the size/rent of the apt.?
It would be a big factor for me, since I hate stairs, and I think it's a definite factor in the rent. On the other hand, I suspect you'd be a lot healthier than people who only take elevators.

It is always better to live in an elevator building as one can use the stairs when one wishes to and the elevator useful for moving/carrying large objects or simply when one is tired.
I lived in a 5 floor walk up on the 5th floor. I had an ass of steal! Down fall was bringing home stuff and having to carry it up all the flights. Also if you forgot something by the time you made it to the bottom you often would say screw it cause you wouldn't feel like running up the stairs again.
I live on the 3rd floor of a walkup. Its not bad. The only times it is a pain is when I have to lug luggage or my bike. I wouldn't live higher than the third floor though.
New York is famous for its' 5 storey walkups. I don't think any other city in the U.S. has this type of housing. These are usually older buildings and have that "old New York" look to them. Lots of character and history. But I wouldn't want to live in one.
Before I lived in building with an elevator, I lived in on a 4th fl. walk up. It was difficult at first (especially when moving large furniture and bringing in the groceries), but I got used to it in no time.
I actually came to miss it, once I "upgraded" to the doorman/elevator dwelling. I found that having to walk up and down, forced me to be fit.
I have been living in a walk on the fourth floor for 26 years.
Love it, love not having anyone walking above me, love having the windows and shades all open with no building in front of me....
Bringing heavy packages is a bit trying, but it like everything, this is just what you do.
I rather walk up to the fourth floor when I can leave my windows open when I am not home, as opposed to living on the first floor and having to close and lock the windows everything I run up the block....

Really? didn't known that.
