From this post and others on this thread this is exactly why I don't understand why they are trying to market the sections of the Bronx especially the ones right across the bridges from Harlem and Washington Heights like its an extension of Manhattan. Most Bronx residents and even other boro residents don't want to live in Manhattan or an atmosphere like Manhattan.
As for myself I hated leaving the Bronx when I left but it was a family decision and I was still under age at the time. Now I'm used to it and I like the conveniences and the fast trip downtown to work. But I miss that since of community that the Bronx has.
It is my sincere hope that someone will have the good sense to develop housing that is family orientated. Some of the best people in the entire world live in the Bronx and they deserve it.

They are marketing sections like Mott Haven, Highbridge, Melrose, etc as an extension of Manhattan because it is a natural extension of UPPER Manhattan. It is very similar and the population is similar as well. It is NOT being marketed as the West Village or Soho by anyone with any reason or logic..but is is a natural extension of Upper Manhattan...the buildings...the population..the urban landscape..etc.

I agree. The west Bronx is very similar to uptown. Both use the same street numbering system. Alot of tenements and housing projects. Very heavy black and latino population. The only difference I see is that uptown is more densely populated.
In hip hop, they say that Washington Heights is cousin of the Bronx and brother of Harlem. So in those terms they're family!
But I prefer the Bronx.

Agreed....they are different in that uptown is more dense..but otherwise they are similar. I prefer the Bronx also..same as uptown but 1/2 the price...2x the space...and more parks!

Yes they are family, and there are similarities. But I don't know if I am correct or not but it seems from your post that you guys never actually lived in Harlem or Washington Heights.
Since I have been here for some time IMHO there are definite differences. Those differences are significant enough that you both prefer the Bronx as do most Bronxites. I also know some Harlemites that have crossed the bridge and now prefer the Bronx because of those differences.
That is why I feel that those things that are different should be promoted. The uniqueness, the things that belong to the Bronx alone. There are people trying to come up to Harlem because it's cheaper than downtown but its in Manhattan so its not that far from what they already know, even though they may not be familiar with Harlem.
These same people may be persuaded to cross the bridge into the Bronx if those unique things about the Bronx were promoted.
Of course some of you are for gentrification, some of you are not. For the ones for gentrication, you may think the draw to the Bronx is Manhattan but if that were so, more people would be there, just because of that and the fact that it is cheaper.
For those of you that are against gentrification you have it right, to show how much it is an extension of Harlem and Washington heights will keep the same people that are shunning Harlem from bypassing it and moving into the Bronx.

Give me the East Bronx anyday over uptown. The central and South Bronx are run down in most parts. As for the West Bronx they have some decent buildings on the Concourse but it's crazy over there. If I had the money, I would love West Harlem either on Convent or Riverside Drive.
Oh yeah I think East Harlem and Spanish Harlem is pretty much the same thing, give or take a few blocks.

After a night out I can usually barely keep my head up straight for the ride to 125... if I lived in the Bronx I'd probably kill myself w/ that.

To supermario:
How silly talking about its "uniqueness" unless u are talking about unique relating to the systematic racism of this country and how people of a certain race were forced to live in less desirable areas. Luckily they made the most of it, but after the renaiisance harlem declined.
Just because someone isnt white they'll have problems there and will feel like they have to fit the stereotypes there and not be themselves.
And going to the south bronx just because u're dominican is really no excuse to live there. If I wasn't white i would NEVER WANT TO LIVE IN THE SOUTH BRONX, especially in these recent times. I would pick the south bronx over very white rural nebraska but there are more attractive options than the bronx in america whether someone is white or not.
I swear i met ppl who live in harlem/south bronx areas like that and they are like afraid do live somewhere else because they think they wont be welcomed anywhere else because of their race. Yeah, repeat the mistakes of history and put yourself in a pathological hole while u have more choices than ever before in american history.
just because someone grows up in one of the biggest cities in the world does not mean there will be more globally conscious or aware of things about the world.
I met more low class (culturally) ppl in nyc than in the suburbs
----
Harlem south bronx areas should be bulldozed. THE PPL DESERVE BETTER
