My wife exchanged her Ontario license for a NY one just a few months ago. No test, took less than an hour.

Indeed it is required once you become a NYS resident to change your out of state license. As noted above the NYSDMV outlines the procedure on their website.

Yes you can and you get a year AFTER the expiry of your Ontario license to do it.

No driver's test needed, neither written or driving as long as you haven't waited 366 days.
If you wait too long it's Learner's Permit all over again.

They test your eyes.

Fee was either $60 or $65 but it's valid for 4 years.
(I just transferred from NJ with about 2 weeks to spare.)

Sweet thanks.

Do I need a U.S SSN to switch licenses?

And switching back from NY to Ontario is just as easy (like in 5 years time if I wanted to)?

I just renewed mine...$85 for 8 years.
Woman at the dmv said look at it as $10 a year

How did you get 8 years, LS?

The DMV issues an original driver license that is valid for a maximum of
five years.
Blitz,
You will need strong proof of identity, so your old driver's license and a passport should suffice.

I was SHOCKED that I got in and out in 40 minutes...I was figuring a week or so. (I went to the Broadway DMV near 33rd.)

Only my very first ever drivers license was for 5 years, all the rest have been 8.
