For a commute to the westside, I would actually look more toward Riverdale in The Bronx. You should be able to find a studio or a share in your projected rent range, and the commute via car, is about 15-20 minutes, depending upon GWB delays that can affect the traffic on the parkway. The Henry Hudson Bridge has a toll, and avoiding it would mean traveling through Inwood on Broadway to the Henry Hudson Parkway, which adds 10 minutes or so, still not a terrible commute via car. If you have a New York E-Z Pass, the rate is $2.44 each way, $5 with any other E-Z Pass or toll by mail.
Street parking is available, and should not be too difficult to find in Riverdale, though a bit more of a challenge in Kingsbridge. If you move the car for work, you will not have to worry too much about the alternate parking restrictions. Avoiding a broker's fee in Riverdale is going to be a bit more of a challenge, however, as much of the market is still broker-driven, though you may find a place that is rented by an owner-manager, or a managed company with its own leasing staff.
