This past Sunday morning around 10:30am I was driving eastbound on the 495/LIE and spotted a drone flying overhead heading westbound. I know these things have a pretty impressive range and can be outfitted with HD cameras. It was black and had 4 propellers.
About a month ago, I spotted a drone flying over Forest Hills Gardens. As I was walking to my parents house I head a faint buzzing sound, decided to look up and there it was!
With all the worry about privacy issues I was wondering if any of you have seen drones flying around? I know they can be purchased easily and some of them can be controlled with smart phones....
Don't get caught, it's illegal to fly one anywhere in the city except at two or three AMA-controlled parks.
cops and ppark police have yet to say anything to me. Actually their is no legality of flying drones to over nyc at the moment, however flying a drone over a certain height can be dangerous and violates FAA rules and airspace. Drones have become very popular as of lately but flying them in cities can be dangerous. If one is going to fly a drone its best to fly a device in an desolate park, a park thats empty or near water front. I actually posted a video on YouTube with me flying my drone around the neighborhood. Drones are already in use in NYC for real estate purposes. Being a drone operator is my new hobby. So the FAA and the city of ny needs to come up with rules, guidelines and restrictions on flying drones because this hobby is becoming more and more popular. Even me I took my drone above 300 feet with planes flying above which are 2000 to 2500 feet which have taken off from LGA. Do I pose a threat? Probably. I try not to go past 300 feet, thats when radar can read aircrafts. Here is a video of a drone operator flying his quadcopter over the building explosion over the heads of cops and policr officers.
I saw one recently in the Bronx. It looked like a construction/surveying team was using them to maybe take pictures of views from future highrise apartments.
