I liked J and R for music and movies. They had vinyl as well. Entertainment buffs who were looking for more obscure film and music often found it here. They thing is, No one seems to buy hard copy music and film anymore and online shopping vs brick and mortar stores is a trend that is only growing. Many retail stores esp electronic are on their way out.
Agreed. Becoming an outdated business model. Everything is going to cloud based and "on-demand"
Within 2 blocks of the 86th St 4/5/6 station, there are 4 Starsbucks. They just built a new one on 87th and third. If they could build retail on Park Ave, there'd probably be 6.
J&R's demise is not at all about Gentrification. Gone are the days of the old Radio Row, from which J&R came out of! The electronics/music retail industry has changed a lot! A lot of stuff is now online!
Working in Lower Manhattan for almost a quarter century, and shopping in J&R for as long, this will be well-missed!
Some J&R concert festival and/or CD signing memories......
Best show.....
1. Teena Marie, funkin' it up with a ten-piece band!
2. Ashford and Simpson! Supposed to be outdoors, but it rained and poured! Nick and Val just took the funk indoors and turned it out!
3. The Roots!
4. Wynton Marsalis Quartet!
Most dissappointing.....
1. Boys 2 Men, the best selling male group of alltime, singing behind tracks instead of a live band!
Most memorable gesture.......
1. Simple handshake of Grover Washington, Jr's hand and wishing him a Merry Christmas! (1999). Four days later, he was dead!
I remember shopping in there when I worked across the street. Back in the mid-90s...you used to have to go up this staircase to get where the DVDs were. And to return something was a pain, you had to bring it to the basement with the twenty receipts they would give you lol.
Manhattan Mall - sh**hole place now
Tower Records - gone
Virgin Megastore - gone
J&R - Soon to be
Changing economy and retail environment.
I miss Tower the most as a die hard music fan. They had everything. it was like if you could not find it there, It many not even exist. Manhattan mall I agree is very mediocre.
I remember some of the small music shops in the Village, They are all gone too I think.

manhattan mall was always pretty ****ty but back then it was less ****ty. I used to go there a lot back in elementary school. I got my first computer from J&R and I thought that their showroom was so awesome.
Manhattan Mall has always sucked. That has always kind of been the charm of that place. That it was a mistake.
