So moving to Brooklyn next month.

Need stuff to setup. Car. TV. Mattress. Etc.

Is Jersey much cheaper than NYC to buy stuff?

Can anyone suggest any places to buy a Car? Household stuff? TV? (Apart from the usual big boxes like Costco and Best Buy)

Thanks,

Hudson County has a sales tax of 3.5%. New York City is 8.875%. Many online retailers: 0%.

Car? Nope, sorry. Gave that game up a decade ago.

Try asking in the New Jersey forum. Or just doing a Google search for car dealerships in Hudson or Essex Counties, NJ (both of which have the low sales tax--most of NJ has 7%, which is not really worth going out of your way for).

The one exception is for expensive clothing. NJ has no sales tax on clothing at any price; NY has sales tax to the extent of value above... $100? I think? So if you're buying expensive clothes, better to shop in NJ.

For TV try www.TigerDirect.com.

Easiest general shopping is probably the Newport Center Mall (Jersey City) right atop the PATH train.

For kitchen gadgets stay in Manhattan and shop JACK'S on 32nd between 6th and 7th. For $$ NICE $$$ kitchen stuff, shop the Bowery.

thats why car rental companies exist--- and if you do rent a car go to a place like white plains to get it. Hertz has a place right across the street from the North white plains metro north station. Renting in the city is about twice as much on average.

Sweet thanks guys.

I didn't realize sales tax in NJ is different in each county. Good to know. I will try to stay in Hudson/Essex counties obviously.

Yeah TigerDirect is awesome in Canada. Good spot. I will check out that mall in Jersey City.

Right, Rental Car.....I guess that is an option. Roughly how much will insurance be for a 29 year old male. Lets say on a car like 2005 Subaru Outback? I know there are obviously tons of factors. my driving record is clean in Canada (dont know if that makes a difference), but I will be a first time driver in U.S. $1000/year a good estimate? Or more.

Appreciate the replies, will also post in NJ forum.

They have cheap buses that go to both philly and boston. Check out Bolt and Megabus

I would assume quite a bit more, though I no longer have a car.

I'm a 30 year old guy (as of a couple of days ago) with a 2006 Honda Accord V6. I pay about $120 a month for full coverage, with some higher limits than normal.

That's in Manhattan, which I've heard typically has the lowest rates in the five boroughs.

I'm in Queens and I've been shopping around for quotes. I'm not getting full coverage because my car is 8 years old. Progressive quoted me $120 a month on 6 month policy, Geico $100.
