Studio =/= 1 bedroom apartment. A studio for $1000 or a bit less is possible. A 1 bedroom, not so much. Even if the bad areas, many cost that or slightly more. In a decent area, a 1 bedroom is $1100-1200. A studio is a bit less, but you may want to consider that over a 1 bedroom.

if you are living in a building that has such cheap rent, expect rats/mice/bedbugs/roaches/the "works" so to speak. in other words, you will have "friends" who will dine in with you every night and also wake you up for work every now and then by crawling on your face...

you also will be living with tenants from low incomes which means they are less educated and less civilized. all they know is their next meal or "street life."

lastly, if you get past the casual drive-by or random gunshot in these bad neighborhoods, you will not be able to dodge the 7pm to 7am street routine of bachata and reggaeton loving folks blasting their gospel through your windows, and walls (they will vibrate at times).

sell your junk, downsize your life, and move in with your other someone into a studio for $1200 and up. you are NOT paying for the home. you are paying for the quality of life/safety.

Last time I checked, it would be either Inwood, Washington Heights or Bushwick, but that was back in 2011.

SE Brooklyn like Brownsville, ENY, Canarsie...I'd take my chances there even with the higher crime. It's not that bad down there.
