Far-Left NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio Is Seemingly Coming to the Rescue of Churches, Reversing Bloomberg Policy | TheBlaze.com

I have no problem with churches or temples of any religion renting space in public schools. No one is forced to attend these religious services.

The schools need the rental income and I don't have a problem with it. Those opposed say its a violation of church and state--which I feel it would be IF the schools were allowing them to use the space for free. However, if they are charging rent, and its the same amount charged to every group then I don't see it as a violation since government resources aren't really being given--they are paid for.

I'm not a lawyer though so that's just my opinion.

Good for de Blasio. I can't think of anything more outlandish than Bloomberg and his ilk thinking that the constitution is being violated because the public schools lease space to a religious organization when school is not in session. It's not as if they are erecting temporary crosses or Stars of David on the buildings.

And by the way Bloomberg, the term "Separation of Church and State" is not in the constitution; it is a letter from Jefferson where he was defending a minority Baptist Church from the mainline Congregational Church in Connecticut.

Now go drink a Big Gulp, smoke a cigarette, and spend some time at a shooting range.

He'll let churches use the space, but not private schools.

Religions have no place in an institution of learning. They have completely opposite goals.

We're not talking about institutions of learning, we're talking about public schools.

Churches have been renting space in public schools for years. Yes, Bloomberg was going to end it but it never happened and the churches are still there.

DeBlasio, basically, has nothing to do with it - unless he's going to change the legislation somehow.

Did not know that.

So what was Bloomberg's motivation to throw out religious groups from the schools? There is NOTHING in the US Constitution that would not allow a public school from leasing space to a religious group. Is he that much of a fanatic?
