Millennials prefer cities with good public transportation (Red Hook: rental, co-ops)

Most millennials have college debt probably totaling around 40k or more. For most millennials who are educated, many have to delay fundamental aspects of becoming an adult like owning property, having kids or getting married due to having college debt. Because of this many will get married late and have children late.
For once I actually agree with you. I'd love to buy a place. It's just absolutely not an option for me with my debt.
But why in the lords name is this forum so obsessed with what millenials like all of the sudden? It's like we're not just normal young humans trying to make our start in one of the worst economies the US has seen in decades. I swear to god I poop just like you poop, and I don't walk on all fours or something like that. Shocking, I know.

Mainly because it's the big bad millennials who moved to NYC and who jacked up the price of real estate in the minds of people here. Realistically though, hipsters and millennials in general had nothing to do with rapidly escalating real estate prices in NYC. Notice NYC didn't utterly collapse like some markets (though it went down a little before a huge rebound). Basically NYC real estate was seen as a safe investment by investors from all over the world while the stock market remains comparatively lackluster.
Millennials living in New York City are getting subsidized support from their parents ...in the form of "you have an emergency expense, we will cover".
You lose your job, you can come back into the house and live under our roof
Here's some birthday cash...use it for broadway show
Otherwise they are earning at least $45K
And even if they are earning $45K they probably do not have health benefits nor a retirement savings account...they are living a fun life with 0 savings and ultimately counting on family fortune to rescue them when they get old
It's a fun place to be in the 18-35 age group
After that you are really making it very difficult to settle down and raise a family unless your salary has climbed to at least $80 - 110K and both parents are employed fulltime ...and you move to the burbs
It is possible to live crammed in the city with kids but then don't count on dining in the city more than a few times in a year
Awesome, good job stereotyping an entire generation.
I'm not getting any subsidized support from my parents. They will not cover any of my emergency expenses. They DO give me birthday cash- maybe $200 per year. Whoah, that's a TON of money. And wow! I earned just over 45k last year. It's like you know me...unfortunately I do have health insurance...as do the vast majority of us. Because it's now required by law.
But really, what's your gripe with young adults having to move home if they lose their job? You'd rather see them homeless? You are aware that the current unemployment rate for people age 19-31 is ~16%, right? Oh, and that's not counting the 1.9 million millennials who have given up looking for work and thus don't count in those figures. Yeah, we're a lazy generation all right. We could have it so easy if only we worked hard like ye old folk who paved the way for us.
It's honestly worth talking sheeit about certain aspects of this city simply to see you get all flustered about people talking sheeit...
Not just NYC. I tend to visit other forums and snoop around to see if people on the NYC forums are being typical or if it's a city-data problem.
I've come to an conclusion that it is indeed a city-data forum, and ironically the forums that don't have these types don't have nothing to do with cities (fashion, education, etc.)

Many of the old people have their own economic problems. Retiring and having social security has your income alone puts you into poverty anywhere in the country. You might be able to deal with if your home is paid for. If not that elderly person is moving into a low income home or some other sort of government housing. Many poor among the elderly live in SROs or shelters.
Moving out of NYC will not save these old people as it costs money to live everywhere and in most of the country you have to drive.

Trust me, I know. My comment wasn't as much a dig at older generations suffering through the same things as it was a dig at older generations implying that younger generations simply aren't trying hard enough. That guy saying that young adults who lose their jobs shouldn't be moving home stung a little bit as a young adult who recently lost their job and is trying to survive on $405 a week unemployment, lol.
My parents are going through the same crappy financial situation stuff right now that we're all going through to some extent. In a lot of ways I have it better- I have all of my working years in front of me to sort this out. Issues with the retirement-age generation are really a different (but related) beast.

Right now I'm at the age where its probably right to settle down and explore adulthood and I have no debts. The problem is that NYC is too expensive, especially from buying property to even raising a kid. Some native New Yorkers, but to a greater degree immigrants have relatives and extended relatives help watch and babysit their kids while mommy and daddy goes to work. Your millennial or highly Americanized Native New Yorker may need to fork out money for daycare service which is expensive. in NYS daycare is more expensive than going to a public college.
Hmm beats me about the millennial stuff. I think it has to do with recent increase of high rents, gentrification, entitlement, faddish trends and pretentious folks that millennials are and this is not coming from millennials who are native to NYC but those who come from the suburbs fresh out of college into NYC.

Its not NYC alone that is like this. Its other big cities that have similar problems just like NYC, such as San Francisco, DC, Boston and Chicago. Also there are not much opportunities in the suburbs these days compared to a generation ago, most notably far flung suburbs away from city cores. Plenty of college grads will not go back home after graduation and will probably hit the big city looking for work and an apartment in the coming months. I known a guy who works for citihabits and he hosted a seminar with other brokers at Ohio State college campus on what folks need upon moving to NYC after graduation. If I was a suburbanite and college educated I would want to move to a big city too.

Moving out of NYC will help old put some ease on their pockets, sad thing is that we can not take money with us when we die regardless of location. Come to think of it, I used to do Long Distance dating with a woman from NC. She used to work as a visiting nurse. Nearly all of her patients were old people. Old people don't need to come out an drive to see a doctor, nurses come to them and its a huge business out there. Even here in NYC you have some old people who cant even walk out of their apartments anymore with out any assistance. Some old people get it lucky, they get 3 checks in the mail, while others may get two, most will only get 1 check in the mail and that's from social security.

No, moving out of NYC puts no ease on your pockets if your only income is social security. Most of your money would go on rent and you'd have no disposable money for anything else. The only way it would help is if you had a house paid for elsewhere, and if the property tax rate and maintenance costs weren't too high.
For the record, visiting nurses are not free. Hiring them costs a lot of money unless the person is so disabled the government will pay for it. For many older people, as they get older their health and state of mind decline, making it harder for them to do things like search for a new place to live.
So with nurses not being available unless they are extremely disabled, OLD people all over the country HAVE to DRIVE. I know many seniors in their 70s and older who still have to drive to get food, buy groceries, go to the doctor, and take care of other business. Keep in mind in much of the rest of the country you have a lot less in the way of social services than NYC.
They don't mind living with each other in a one room flat like cats either I guess.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. It's like the media is
marketing poverty like it's supposed to be cool or something, but nobody sees
it. Everyone is expected to settle for less and less these days. So, that's why
your clothes are so tight. They're stripping your threads and charging you more
for it at the same time smh.
Enough already!
